LUBBOCK, Texas - Sophomore Jacob Gutierrez racked up four RBIs to help power the No. 4 Lubbock Christian Chaparrals past the Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions 7-6 on Friday. With the win the Chaps advance to the finals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament.
Senior Ayden Alger (6-3) got the win for LCU (40-14). The left-hander went six innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on nine hits, allowing one walk and striking out three.
Gutierrez went 3-for-5 with a double in addition to his four RBIs for the Chaps. Senior Hayden Blair put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Senior Carson Ogilvie also contributed for LCU, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chaps put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning. LCU scored twice on a two-run double off the bat of Gutierrez.
The Lions failed to push any runs across before the Chaps built on their lead in the fifth inning. LCU plated two runs off of UAFS pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Blair, which brought the Chaps lead to 4-0.
UAFS narrowed LCU's lead to 4-3 before the Chaps stretched the advantage to 6-3 in the seventh inning. The Chaps picked up two runs in the inning, highlighted by another RBI double by Blair.
LCU kept the Lions scoreless before their offense got things rolling the next inning. Junior Frayner Chavez crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Chaps, bringing the score to 7-3 in favor of LCU. UAFS put three runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Chaps slammed the door in the ninth inning to secure the victory and remain undefeated in the tournament.
GAME NOTES
- LCU got three-hit games from both Blair and Gutierrez.
- Every LCU starter reached base safely in the win. Blair, Gutierrez, and Ogilvie all recorded multiple hits in the game.
- The Chaps went 6-for-13 (.462) with runners in scoring position.
- LCU pitchers faced 45 UAFS hitters in the game, allowing seven ground balls and 12 fly balls while striking out six.
- Senior Chris Shull picked up the save out of the bullpen for LCU. The right-hander allowed three runs, all earned, walked five, and struck out three in three innings of work.
- The Chaps recorded five doubles in the win.
- With the win the Chaps reach the 40 win mark and extend their win streak to nine straight, tying their longest win streak of the season.
- UAFS was led offensively by freshman Blayse Quarnstrom, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
