Smith's Second-Half Strikes Secures Chap Success

LCU Beats UTPB 1-0

LUBBOCK, Texas (Oct. 1, 2025) — Lubbock Christian University shut out the UT Permian Basin 1-0 on Wednesday at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex.

The decisive goal came in the second half, securing the win for the Chaparrals. The team's defense held strong, with their goalkeeper making two key saves to maintain the clean sheet.

The Lady Chaps advanced to 4-3-2 overall and 2-1-2 in conference play with the victory. The Falcons fell to 2-4-1 overall and 1-4-0 in LSC competition.

The first half began with the Chaps asserting offensive pressure early, as Lauren Rotan took a shot on goal in the fourth minute, saved by UT Permian Basin's goalkeeper, Valeria Delgado. The Lady Chaps continued to apply pressure with multiple attempts, including shots from Ella Spiller and Sydney Smith, but Delgado remained formidable in goal, denying several scoring opportunities.

Despite Lubbock Christian's continued offensive efforts, highlighted by Maya Quinones' shot in the 20th minute, the half closed with both teams unable to break the deadlock.

The second half began with the Lady Chaps maintaining pressure on UT Permian Basin, generating multiple opportunities early. Abcdee Herrera and Spiller each registered shots that kept the visiting defense alert, though neither found the target.

Riley Espinoza and Journey Curs added attempts, signaling the Lady Chaps' attacking intent. The breakthrough came in the 81st minute when Smith scored on an absolute rocket from outside the 18-yard box. Spiller assisted on the goal that ended up as the difference in the win.

LCU continued to press and nearly doubled the lead when Logan Holloway struck the woodwork in the 89th minute, ending the game 1-0.

Smith scored the game-winning goal, converting one of her three shots into the lone score for the team. Wright recorded a shutout, making two saves to secure the victory. Rotan led the defense with four shots, including one on goal. Spiller contributed an assist and added five shots, two of which were on target.
