AWARD CENTRAL
Lubbock Christian senior defender
Geoffroy Letienne was named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. Letienne helped fuel an unbeaten week for the Chaparrals, including a shutout of LSC defending champion St. Mary's. Letienne, who played all 180 minutes over the two matches and leads LCU in minutes played this season, was crucial in two late stops to preserve a one-goal win over St. Edward's.
OFFENSIVE OUTBURST
The Chaparrals exploded for three goals in Saturday's win against St. Edward's, breaking a scoreless streak that lasted nearly 600 minutes of game action. It was a goal from
Aron DePaula that broke them through early in the second half after LCU fell behind by a pair of goals. Then
Jack Brassey, playing in only his third collegiate game, evened the score with less than 10 minutes to play and
Kade McKinzie scored the game-winner. McKinzie's goal was his second of the season, making him the second Chap with multiple goals this year. LCU is now averaging 1.0 goals on 14.2 shots per game.
SHOOTING STARS
LCU has been one of the best teams at creating offensive chances, taking 128 shots overall, which is the third-most in the conference. Eighteen of those came on Saturday against St. Edward's, marking the third-most the Chaps have had in a single game this year. Of the total, 46 have been on goal for a shots on goal percentage of 35.9. Nunez and
Pedro Lucas rank third and fourth in the conference in shots per game with 2.56 and 2.50, respectively.
IN THEIR DEFENSE
Lubbock Christian notched its third shutout of the season last week against St. Mary's and is now more than halfway to their 2024 season total of five shutouts. LCU is now allowing an average of just 1.0 goals per game, which is the fourth-best mark in the conference. Chap opponents are averaging just 12.2 shots per game and have put only 39 on goal for a shots on goal percentage of .358. Senior captain
Geoffroy Letienne anchors the back line with a team-leading 697 minutes played.
LOOKING AT THE LONE STAR
After the first week of Lone Star Conference play, Lubbock Christian is tied for the league lead in points with four. West Texas A&M was the only other team to earn four points the opening week of league play, but there is a cluster of teams behind the league leaders with three points. UT Tyler was the only team to go 0-2, and St. Mary's and TAMIU both went 0-0-1.
HOME TURF
Lubbock Christian is 0-3-1 at home so far this season after going 2-3-3 at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex in 2024. Including the TAMIU contest, there are four more home games this season. They have not posted more wins than losses in Lubbock since the 2022 campaign, when they were 4-2-3. The LCU Soccer & Track Complex was completed in August of 2020 and features an AstroTurf playing surface, a Musco lighting system to allow for night games and stadium seating for 500 fans. LCU's men have an all-time record of 59-41-21 in home games. The best season at home was just their second in existence, as they went 8-1-1 in 2011.
FRESH FACES
If you haven't seen the LCU men in action yet this season, you might not recognized a lot of the faces on the field. In both transfers and high school recruits, Lubbock Christian added 19 new players. Seven of the players are transfers from other schools and 11 are fresh out of high school. Three players transferred from Division I schools and made a significant impact this season, including
Joao Catafesta (New Hampshire),
Pedro Lucas (Albany) and
Augusto Militao (Missouri-Kansas City).
SCOUTING THE DUSTDEVILS
- TAMIU is averaging 1.89 goals per game, which is the third-best mark in the Lone Star Conference
- Tiziano Klamler leads the team in points with nine, having scored two goals and assisted five others
- Three different goalkeepers have split time for the Dustdevils. With Emmanuel Esuqivel leading the team with a .632 save percentage
- Head coach Claudio Arias is in his 22nd season leading the Dustdevils with an all-time record of 224-197-54
- Freshman Jorge Delgado leads the team in minutes played with 746
