SAN ANTONIO, Texas (February 21, 2025) – It was a back-and-forth battle early and a pitcher's duel late, as St. Mary's won the series-opener 8-7 over Lubbock Christian in 10 innings on Friday at Dickson Stadium.
Â
Logan Moore suffered the loss late, allowing a single and a walk in the bottom of the 10th. Moore had come on in relief of Andrew Duran, who had an excellent outing out of the bullpen, pitching seven innings with two runs allowed and nine strikeouts.
Â
At the plate, the Chaparrals were led by senior Brevin McCool, who finished a double shy of the cycle with three walks – one intentional – and four RBI.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chaparrals got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning, but St. Mary's answered with a three-run homer in the bottom of the second to go on top.
LCU see-sawed back on McCool's two-run homer in the top of the third, which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Chaparrals. Lubbock Christian's lead quickly disappeared once again in the fourth inning when the Rattlers scored four runs, chasing Lex Garcia from the game for Duran. Duran gave up his only two runs in that frame before getting a flyout to end the frame.
In the top of the fourth, LCU answered with a pair of runs on a Kyle Lewis double and a Shea Bowen groundout, cutting the deficit to 7-6. The Chaps tied the game with their final run in the top of the sixth on McCool's triple, which scored Bowen.
The Rattlers used three pitchers through the seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th innings, allowing five walks, but just one hit. LCU had a good scoring chance in the 10th, getting runners to first and third with one out, but a lineout double play ended the threat, and giving StMU the chance to score the walkoff winner.
