SAN ANTONIO, Texas (February 23, 2025) – Lubbock Christian was held to just four hits on Sunday, falling to St. Mary's 9-2 at Dickson Stadium.
The loss gave the Chaparrals a series split and dropped them to 9-7 on the season and in LSC play.
Â
Right-hander Jake Llaneza suffered the loss in his first start of the season, as St. Mary's starter Hagen Rose lived up to his billing. The junior continued his streak without an earned run, allowing just one unearned run on two hits and one walk while striking out a season-high six strikeouts.
Â
At the plate, the Chaps were led by right fielder Jacob Gutierrez, who had the only multi-hit performance for LCU. Infielder Brevin McCool and designated hitter Johnny Gomez III had the other two hits on the day for Lubbock Christian. McCool's hit left the yard for his 11th homer of the year.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the third, when the Rattlers used four hits and a walk to take a 4-0 lead. LCU got a run back in the fifth when Gutierrez reached on a fielding error, coming around to score on the single by Gomezz III.
Â
The Rattlers added insurance in the seventh scoring four runs, two of which were unearned. Three of the runs went on the ledger of Dakota McCaskill and one to Kyler Carpenter. StMU's final run also came off Carpenter in the eighth and was also unearned. Lubbock Christian committed three errors in the game after previously not committing any errors in the first three games.
Â
McCool homered with two outs in the ninth, and Gutierrez followed with a single, but a groundout ended the game.
