Crazy Eights: Eight-Run Inning Powers LCU to Eighth Straight Win

Chaps Run-Rule Hilltoppers

AUSTIN, Texas (March 29, 2025) – Kade York and Nicklaus Baumbach both homered Saturday as Lubbock Christian came from behind and run-ruled No. 26 St. Edward's 14-3 at Lucian Hamilton Field.

Andrew Duran (4-1) got the win out of the bullpen for Lubbock Christian (21-10, 20-9). The right-hander went two shutout innings without giving up a hit, striking out two.

York had the big swing of the day, breaking the 3-3 tie with a grand slam in the top of the sixth. Baumbach's homer came in the seventh with two men on base. It is his fifth of the season, and all of them have come on the road. B. Tijerina also helped out for Lubbock Christian, putting together three hits in five trips and driving in a pair of runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Karson Dunn started the game on the bump for LCU, working a scoreless first before the Hiltoppers got on the board with a pair of runs in the second. The Chaps answered with a single run of their own in the third, but SEU answered with one in the bottom of the inning.

It would be the last run they scored all day.

The Chaparrals tied the game in the fifth inning, using a two-out rally. Frayner Chavez got things going with a single and a stolen base, and Shea Bowen followed with a walk. Chavez scored on a single from Brevin McCool, and Jacob Gutierrez drove in Bowen to even the score.

St. Edward's put the go-ahead runner in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth, when LCU called on Duran. The Hilltoppers even loaded the bases with one out, but Duran struck out back-to-back batters to end the threat.

Taking the momentum from Duran's Ks, LCU turned the  3-3 tie into an 11-3 lead in the sixth. York broke the tie with the grand slam, but the Chaps didn't stop there, getting RBI from Tijerina and Johnny Gomez III as they sent 14 batters to the plate. The Hilltoppers used three pitchers in the frame and did not help themselves out, committing a pair of errors.

Baumbach's homer in the seventh put the Chaps up by 11, and Logan Moore relieved Duran and worked around a one-out walk to close out the run-rule win.
