Kendra Levesque followed with an RBI double to center, and after a groundout moved her to third,
Kristen Boyd capped the rally with an RBI double to left-center for a 4-0 advantage.
Midwestern State (20-32, 14-13) trimmed into the lead with solo runs in the third and sixth innings. Madison Stewart hit a solo home run down the left field line in the third, and Camile Nunez doubled and scored on a single by Emma Roach in the sixth, aided by an outfield error. LCU missed opportunities to add insurance, stranding 11 runners, including leaving the bases loaded in the second and two more runners aboard in the sixth. HOW IT HAPPENED
Midwestern State (20-32, 14-14) jumped on LCU early, plating three runs in the first inning on a triple by Camile Nunez, an RBI groundout by Myranda Jimenez, and a two-out single from Mikey Dominguez. The Mustangs kept the momentum in the third inning, stretching their lead to 6-0 with a three-run frame that featured a sacrifice fly by Madison Stewart and a two-run single by Lexi Mills.
LCU found some life in the bottom of the third when
Kawehi Ili launched a solo home run to center, but the Mustangs still carried a five-run lead into the fourth. The home run ball appeared short of becoming Ili's fourth of the season, but the ball deflected off Dominguez, the centerfielder, and ended up over the wall.
The Lady Chaps capitalized on defensive miscues by MSU in the fourth inning, putting together a four-run rally. Boyd led off with a homer to left, and after a fielder's choice and an error,
Piper Garcia scored on another defensive mistake. A two-run single to center from
Kendra Levesque tied the game at 6-6, with two of the runs unearned due to Midwestern State's pair of errors. Levesque, would end up being thrown out trying to extend the hit into a double, which ended the inning.
LCU threatened again in the fifth, loading up opportunities after a double from Myers, but left runners stranded. Midwestern State reclaimed a 7-5 lead in the top of the seventh behind an RBI single by Addison Lindemann after a key wild pitch advanced a runner to third.
Trailing by two entering their final at-bat, LCU responded quickly. Myers doubled again to set the table, and Boyd followed with a single to left, advancing Myers to third. A wild pitch allowed Myers to score, cutting the deficit to one, and after a walk to
Kadin Vire, Garcia lifted a sacrifice fly to bring Boyd home with the tying run.
Bailey Hughes and
Riley Flores kept the rally alive with back-to-back singles, and Vire crossed the plate on a throwing play for the walk-off run. Vire, originating at second base, never broke stride rounding third, as shortstop Nunez made an attempt to retire Flores at first base. As Flores beat the throw, first baseman Mills was unable to dig-out the throw from Nunez and was unable to make a throw home as Vire touched the plate to begin the celebration.
