CANYON, Texas (May 8, 2025) – Lubbock Christian University fell into the elimination bracket of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional after a 9-4 loss to No. 3-ranked and second-seeded West Texas A&M Thursday at Schaeffer Park. The Lady Chaps received a 3-for-3 performance at the plate from
Kristen Boyd, but were unable to overcome early defensive miscues and a pair of three-run innings by the hosts. LCU (36-21) will now face No.6-seed Colorado Mesa in an elimination game at 2:30 p.m. Friday
Teoni Lamb (11-8) got the ball to start for Lubbock Christian (36-21) and took the loss. In addition to her three hits, Boyd had two doubles, a walk and two RBI to lead the Lady Chaps.
Riley Flores had the only other multi-hit game for LCU (2-for-3).
Kendra Levesque compiled a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with a home run and an RBI.
Kawehi Ili also contributed for Lubbock Christian, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
LCU struck first with an unearned run in the top of the first as
Baylea Myers reached on a two-out error and came around to score on a Boyd's first double of the day. WT quickly answered in the bottom half when Abby Howell scored on an Emilee Boyer double to tie the game 1-1.
A pair of LCU fielding errors in the second helped the Lady Buffs seize momentum. With two on and no outs, a sacrifice bunt turned into a bases-loaded situation due to a fielding error by pitcher
Teoni Lamb. After a sacrifice fly by Lauren Granger gave WT a 2-1 lead, Cadence Colborn followed with a two-out, two-run triple to right-center, stretching the lead to 4-1 with all three runs in the inning going unearned.
LCU chipped away in the fifth, capitalizing on a leadoff single from Flores and a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 4-2 on a sac fly from
Kawehi Ili.
Kendra Levesque then launched a solo homer to right, and Boyd tied the game 4-4 with her third hit of the afternoon, a run-scoring double down the first-base line.
But the tie was short-lived. WT regained control in the home half of the fifth with another three-run burst. A walk and overturned controversial hit-by-pitch set the stage for Halie Stoneking's RBI-single. Trinity Kuntz delivered a two-run double down the left field line to make it 7-4.
Reese Farrar entered in relief and recorded the final out of the inning.
LCU mounted a threat in the sixth, putting runners at second and third with two outs after a walk, single, and passed ball. But Boyer, who entered in relief that frame, escaped the jam with a strikeout. WT added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth—one on sac-fly resulting in a dropped fly ball, and another on a delayed double steal attempt (lead runner scored but trail runner was retired)—pushing the final margin to 9-4.
GAME NOTES
» Boyd led the Chaparrals, amassing three base knocks in the ballgame. She becomes the fourth Lady Chap to produce a pair of doubles in a NCAA postseason game for LCU, joining
Kamryn Gibbs (May 13, 2022),
Skylar Herrera (May 14, 2022) and
Brooke Makemson (May 14, 2022). She now has 22 doubles on the season, which is one shy of the team lead held by
Kendra Levesque, who ranks second nationally in the category. Boyd also had two RBI in the game, which were both two-out RBI to increase her team lead to 20 two-out RBI.
»
Kendra Levesque hit the game's only home run, which was a blast over the right field fence for her team-leading 13
th homer of the season. The home run was LCU's eighth NCAA postseason home run all-time.
» West Texas A&M worked in 16 different players into the lineup Thursday (only two pitchers). Heidi Vortherms led the Buffaloes pitching staff, throwing 4.2 innings of three-run ball.
» The loss was LCU's first of the season when they are tied with their opponent in hits (each had eight hits) and they are now 6-1 when it occurs.
» Of LCU's last 21 games, they are 15-6 and all six losses are against teams ranked inside the top-10 nationally and three are by WT. LCU falls to 4-11 against nationally ranked programs this season (they have played 10 games against teams inside the top-10 this season).
» Technically a road game, LCU falls to 10-14 in road play on the season (eight of their 24 road games have been at top-10 programs).
» LCU was making their first postseason appearance since 2023 and they fall to 4-9 all-time in NCAA postseason play.
HISTORY LESSON
The two programs were meeting for a 39
th time all-time and for the first time in a NCAA postseason contest. WTAMU improved to 27–12 all-time against the Lady Chaps, who drop to 4-15 all-time in matchups in Canyon.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Lady Chaps fall into an elimination game at 2:30 p.m. Friday against Colorado Mesa, with the losing team eliminated and the winner advancing to an additional elimination game afterwards against either WT or Angelo State. LCU has only faced Colorado Mesa once in program history, and it was in a heated affair on May 12, 2017, which was claimed by CMU in the 2017 South Central Regional in San Angelo, Texas.
