LUBBOCK, Texas (September 25, 2025) — Lubbock Christian University fell to Sul Ross State University 1-0 on Thursday at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex.
Despite outshooting Sul Ross State 23-7, the Chaparrals were unable to break through, as Sul Ross State's goalkeeper recorded seven saves to secure the shutout. The decisive goal came in the second half, with Sul Ross State capitalizing on a penalty kick.
Lubbock Christian University dropped to 1-5-1 overall after the loss. Sul Ross State improved their record to 3-2-2 overall.
The first half began with Lubbock Christian generating multiple offensive opportunities. The Chaps had an excellent chance just 35 seconds into the game, but was called offsides. The flag up became a common theme throughout the night. LCU was called for offside five more times, two of which resulted in Chaparral goals.
Early shots by
Aron DePaula and
Pedro Lucas tested Sul Ross State's goalkeeper, Benjamin Aviles, who managed multiple saves to keep the match level.
Connor Pettigrew matched Aviles' efforts on the defensive end, saving shots from Jose Ramos and Mario Hurtado.
The Chaparrals continued to pressure with efforts from
Manu Nunez and
Augusto Militao, but Aviles remained firm in goal. The half closed with both teams unable to break the deadlock, entering halftime with a 0-0 scoreline.
Lubbock Christian came out strong in the second half, highlighted by shots from Nunez and Lucas, the latter narrowly missing as it struck the woodwork.
There was a shift in momentum as Sul Ross State capitalized on a penalty kick, with Miguel Achique finding the back of the net in the 61st minute. Despite multiple corner kick opportunities and persistent pressure from the Chaparrals, Sul Ross State's defense, anchored by goalkeeper Aviles, held firm.
As the half drew to a close, the Chaps continued to push forward with shots from
Francisco Horta and
Geoffroy Letienne. However, the visiting team maintained their advantage. The half concluded with Sul Ross State holding a 1-0 lead.
Lucas led the Chaparrals with five shots. Nunez also contributed five shots, with two on target.
GAME NOTES:
- Lucas recorded a season-high four shots on goal in the game, which is the most by a Chaparral in a single game this season
- Pettigrew made four saves in the loss and now has a .741 save percentage for the season
- LCU out-shot SRSU 23 to 7 in the loss. It is the second time this season they have out-shot an opponent in a loss
