Chaps Drop High-Scoring Saturday Showdown

LCU Erases Seven-Run Deficit, Falls 18-6

TYLER, Texas (January 31, 2026) — Lubbock Christian University mounted a furious comeback, but fell to the UT Tyler in a high-scoring affair, 18-12, on Saturday at Irwin Field.

The Chaparrals rallied with a seven-run sixth inning, but UTT's consistent scoring, including a pivotal four-run eighth inning, secured the win. Both teams recorded four errors, contributing to the extended duration of the game, which lasted more than four hours.

Lubbock Christian fell behind 3-0 in the first, but rallied in the second when Johnny Gomez III homered to left field, putting the Chaps on the board. Jorge De Los Santos then reached base on a throwing error, setting the stage for Tanner Pachorek and Dylan Marx to advance him and ultimately score on Carlos Mauldin's two-RBI single, giving the Chaparrals a 3-2 lead by the end of the inning.

UT Tyler tied the game back up in the bottom of the frame and pushed back in front with a run in the fourth before adding to their lead with a six-run fifth.

The Chaps wouldn't go away quietly though and were able to come all the way back and tie the game at 10 in the sixth, despite collecting just one hit in the frame. After Kyle Lewis reached base on a throwing error, a series of walks and wild pitches allowed LCU to capitalize, scoring seven runs across the inning. This included an RBI walk by Gomez and a sacrifice fly by Pachorek.

In the bottom of the inning, the Patriots edged back in front with three runs. They scored one more in the seventh and four in the eighth, out-pacing LCU's single runs in the eighth and ninth.

GAME NOTES:
- Despite the 12 runs, the Lady Chaps hit just 2-for-19 with runners in scoring position in the game, stranding 15 runners.
- Owen Alsup had the first pinch hit of the season by a Chap with a single to left field in the top of the fifth.
- Will Cooper closed out the game on the mound for LC, striking out a career-high two batters in his appearance.
- Carlos Mauldin had the only multi-hit game by a Chap, and drove in four runs, which is the most by any LC player this season.

NEXT UP:
Lubbock Christian will try and salvage a game in the series on Sunday, as they take on the Patriots in the series finale at 1 p.m.
