Strong Pitching Leads Chaps to DH Sweep

Dunn, Rubio Shine on Saturday

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 28, 2026) – Lubbock Christian University clinched a series win over UT Dallas and swept Saturday's doubleheader with a pair of comeback victories, winning 6-2 and 2-1 at Hays Field.

Outfielder Freddie Nolen had the biggest swing of both games on a day where the Chap pitching staff shined. Nolen hit a pinch-hit, bases-clearing double to give LCU insurance in the first game of the day, and blasted a game-tying home run in the sixth inning of the second game.

GAME ONE
After zeroes from both teams in the first inning, Johnny Gomez III's second inning double to left center brought Aaron Morales home to get the scoring started and give the Chaps the lead.

Both teams then stayed quiet until the fourth inning, when there was a flurry of activity. UT Dallas scored twice to take the lead, with Gavin Barker's single bringing in a run and a throwing error allowing another.

But the Chaparrals responded decisively. Kyle Lewis scored on a fielder's choice coupled with a throwing error. Dylan Marx then drove in Gomez with a single, and Nolen delivered the nail in the coffin with his three-run double.

LCU starter Karson Dunn pitched one more scoreless frame before ceding the mound to Griffin Binkley, who did not allow a hit in his two innings of relief to secure the 6-2 Lubbock Christian win.

Dunn scattered seven hits while striking out four and walking one as he improved to 3-2 with the win. He threw 85 pitches, 58 of which were strikes, and recorded seven groundouts.

GAME TWO
It was a pitcher's duel in the second game of the day, as Aaron Rubio and Seth Taylor did battle. Rubio allowed just three hits in his six innings of work, while striking out a season-high eight batters.

Taylor didn't have the strikeout numbers of the Chap hurler, but matched him zero for zero through the first five frames. LCU had their chances, putting runners in scoring position in the first, second and fourth innings, but they were unable to break through.

The Comets got on the board first, scoring in the top of the sixth and penultimate frame. LCU nearly got out of it without any damage, as Lewis threw out Jake Amoroso at the plate after a single from Garza. But Barker came through for the visitors and drove in the go-ahead run.

UTD's lead did not last long, as Nolen hammered the first pitch of the bottom of the sixth over the left field wall for his first home run of the season.

Isaiah Gonzalez pitched a scoreless seventh in relief for the Chaps, giving them the chance to walk it off. An error by the Comet first baseman put a runner on, and LCU pinch ran Saadiq McCain. Hudson Grace nearly ended the game himself with a ball hit to left center, but it bounced over the wall and force McCain to hold at third.

An intentional walk to Lewis brought up Jorge De Los Santos, who drew a full count walk of his own to push the winning run across.

GAME NOTES:
  • Nolen's home run is the 18th by a Chap this season, which is the second-most among Lone Star Conference teams
  • Lubbock Christian now has the chance to go for their first series sweep of the season. Last year, LCU had three series sweeps
  • Allowing just five earned runs in 21 innings of work so far this weekend, the Chap pitching staff has lowered the team ERA by almost an entire run
  • Despite the pair of wins, Lubbock Christian hit just .200 (4-for-20) with runners in scoring position on Saturday
  • LCU stole three more bases on the day and now has 37 this season, just four away from matching their 2025 season total
