Heartbreak, Homers & Heavyweights: Lady Chaps Tested in California Debut

LCU Drops Extra-Inning Thriller to San Francisco State, Falls to No. 14 Cal State San Marcos at D2 West Coast Challenge

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (February 6, 2026) – Lubbock Christian University endured a roller-coaster opening day at the NCAA Division II West Coast Challenge, dropping a heartbreaking 11–10 extra-inning decision to San Francisco State in the morning before falling 8–0 to No. 14 Cal State San Marcos Friday afternoon at Rosetta Canyon Sports Park.

GAME vs. SFSU
The Lady Chaps dropped a hard-fought extra-inning contest to San Francisco State, falling 11–10 in nine innings Friday morning in their opening game of the NCAA Division II West Coast Challenge. The Lady Chaps (0–4) received a pair of three-run home runs from freshman Coryn Burris, but San Francisco State (4–2) used a five-run ninth inning to walk off with the victory.

Burris finished 2-for-3 with two home runs and six RBI to pace the LCU offense, while Kadin Vire and Lexi Clark each collected two hits. Freshman Alexis Pacheco added a double and drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. In the circle, Kenzie Kauk (0–1) suffered the loss after returning to pitch in the ninth, while Kharime Caratachea (2–1) earned the win for the Gators. Offensively for San Francisco State, Morreira had two hits and an RBI, while Cardwell and Wilson each drove in a run during the decisive ninth-inning rally.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Lubbock Christian struck first in the opening inning, plating two runs on RBI hits from Kenzie Kauk and Lexi Clark to take an early 2–0 advantage. San Francisco State answered with a run in the bottom half when Morreira doubled down the right-field line to score Mares.

The Gators evened the game in the second inning as Rocha doubled to left-center to drive in an unearned run, making it 2–2. San Francisco State then took its first lead in the third on a solo home run by Cardwell to left-center.

LCU regained control in the fifth inning with a big swing from Burris, who launched a three-run homer to center field, scoring Vire and Ashlinn Hamilton and giving the Lady Chaps a 5–3 lead.

San Francisco State trimmed the deficit to 5–4 in the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice, but LCU protected the lead until the seventh, when a trio of wild pitches allowed the tying run to score.

In the eighth, Lubbock Christian moved Clark into scoring position and reclaimed the lead when Pacheco delivered a sacrifice fly to right field, making it 6–5.

The Gators answered in the bottom of the eighth with an unearned run on an RBI single by Moscardi to knot the game at 6–6.

LCU appeared to seize momentum in the ninth. With Vire and Cat Prisock on base, Burris blasted her second three-run homer of the game, this time to left field, pushing the Lady Chaps in front 9–6. LCU added an insurance run later in the inning when Pacheco scored on a San Francisco State fielding error.

San Francisco State responded with a five-run rally in the bottom of the ninth. RBI singles from Cardwell, Wilson and Nelson, followed by a sacrifice fly from Rapp, capped the comeback and sealed the 11–10 walk-off victory.

GAME NOTES
» The 11 runs scored by SFSU were the most by an LCU opponent since West Texas A&M scored 12 runs on April 22, 2023.

» LCU freshman Coryn Burris homered twice and racked up 6 RBI, which is the highest total by a Lady Chaps since Ashlinn Hamilton had a six-RBI game against Western New Mexico on April 16, 2025.

» The extra-inning contest places LCU at 0-1 in games going extra frames this season. LCU was 1-0 in extra-inning results last season.

» Five different Lady Chaps had multi-hit games, including Riley Flores, who had a three-hit game (3-for-4).

HISTORY LESSON
The game marked LCU's first game on California soil. In addition, it was the first meeting between the two squads.

GAME vs. CSUSM
No. 14-ranked Cal State San Marcos used a pair of home runs and steady pitching to hand LCU an 8–0 setback in their second game Friday afternoon. The Cougars improved to 5–1 on the season, while the Lady Chaps slipped to 0–5. CSUSM received multi-hit performances from Marissa Morales and Jillian Albayati, who combined for four hits and three RBI, while Sarah Bull and Albayati each homered. In the circle, Jordan Hill (3–0) earned the win after tossing four shutout innings with seven strikeouts, and Delilah Cardenas closed with a scoreless fifth. LCU collected six hits in the contest, led by Alexis Pacheco, who went 2-for-2, while Kadin Vire tripled and added one of the Lady Chaps' extra-base hits. Ashlinn Hamilton (0–2) took the loss for Lubbock Christian after allowing six runs (four earned) over 3.2 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams were held scoreless in the opening inning, though LCU threatened when Vire tripled to center field with two outs before Cal State San Marcos escaped with back-to-back strikeouts.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the second inning. After Lauren DePlitch reached on an error, Kaila Siu doubled to right-center to drive in the game's first run. Jordan Elias followed with a single to push Siu to third, giving CSUSM a 1–0 lead.

Cal State San Marcos added to its advantage in the third inning when Morales doubled and Albayati followed with a two-run home run to center field, extending the margin to 3–0.
The Cougars struck again in the fourth. Bull launched a solo home run to right-center, and Morales later doubled home Elias to make it 5–0.

Lubbock Christian put together its best threat in the bottom of the fourth as Alexis Clark, Pacheco and Hamilton all singled to load the bases, but Hill induced a pop-up to strand all three runners.

CSUSM padded its lead in the fifth inning. Olivia Rivera walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly by DePlitch, and Bull followed with a second sacrifice fly to plate Fleischman, pushing the advantage to 7–0.

LCU was unable to mount a comeback in the final frame, as Cardenas worked around a single by Gabbi Diotalevi to close out the shutout victory.

GAME NOTES
» The Lady Chaps fell for the first time this season in shutout fashion. LCU suffered three shutouts last season.

» LCU is 0–5 to start the season for the first time in their history… a rare opening stretch for a program that has been a regular postseason contender in their history.
