Lubbock Christian Starts Strong at First XC Meet

Chaps Place Second, Lady Chaps Take Sixth

LAWTON, Oklahoma (September 4, 2026) – The Lubbock Christian University men's and women's cross country teams had an impressive showing to open the 2026 season, with the men placing second and the women finishing sixth overall at the Aggie Duels hosted by Cameron.
 
The Chaparrals earned their runner-up finish with a total of 56 points. East Central was the winner of the event with 39 total points.
 
Three LCU runners finished in the top 10 individually, led by senior Alfons Rawall. His time of 26:16.7 was a new personal best for a 5k race. Fellow seniors Gavin Morrison and Matthew Gordon joined him in the top 10 and also recorded new PRs. Morrison ran a 26:39.6 to place ninth, and Gordon came in right behind him with a time of 26:41.2.
 
Micah Zapata had a strong start to his sophomore campaign, taking 17th with a time of 27:53.0. Byron Lopez was the highest-finishing of LCU's five freshmen at the meet, coming in 20th with a time of 27:59.4.
 
Austin Martinez finished in 33rd with a time of 28:47.9, Jayden Barnes took 35th with a time of 28:53.3, Jackson Martinez was 42nd with a time of 29:30.1, Brock Oliver took 45th with a time of 29:50.2 and Christian Morales rounded out the competing Chaps with a time of 34:01.8.
 
On the women's side, Lily Rodriguez led the way, earning a sixth place finish in her first race of her sophomore season. She posted a time of 19:49.7, which was her best 5K time in collegiate competition.
 
The next three Lady Chap finishers were freshmen competing in their first collegiate meets. Cayleigh Madrid placed 16th with a time of 19.59.0, and Braylee Cothrin came in right behind her with a time of 20:0.0. Makaylee Morillon took 30th with a time of 20:40.4.
 
Reese Pena took 39th in her first meet with Lubbock Christian, posting a time of 21:25.8. Closing out the LCU team, Jaslynn Chavira took 48th with a time of 22:02.2, Marlene Chavaria placed 49th with a time of 22:02.6 and Hannah Doss took 52nd with a time of 22:21.5.
 
Lubbock Christian will be off next weekend before their first home meet of the season on Sept. 12 when they run at the Texas Tech Open at the LCU Cross Country Course.
