Barnett joined the LCU coaching staff in the 2017 season. He came to LCU from Lawton, Okla., where he spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons at Cameron University as the hitting and outfield coach. He helped the Aggies improve from 19-29 (2015) to 31-21 (2016). The Aggies finished leading the Lone Star Conference in homers, while also ranking second in average and doubles. Cameron finished fourth in the conference and claimed their first Lone Star Conference Tournament appearance since 2011.
Barnett prepped at Lubbock Cooper and was part of the 2005 state tournament runner-up squad. He attended UTSA, Midland college and Cameron University, where he was part of the 2009 team that led NCAA DII in runs scored per game (team went 42-15). Prior to Cameron, he coached at Sul Ross University in 2014, where he helped the team to the first ASC conference tournament appearance in 15 years.
