Justin Sundlie

Sundlie (sund-lee) is serving in his seventh season as the Chaps pitching coach. He returned to LCU in 2013 for a third time in his career.

As pitching coach, Sundlie has found tremendous success, ranking in the top half of the Heartland Conference in earned run average each of the last three years. In 2018, the Chap staff was ranked second in the conference in strikeouts per nine innings and included pitcher Ryan Johnson, who ranked 25th nationally with just 6.61 hits allowed per nine innings. LCU limited opponents to just a .262 batting average and got a league-leading 11 saves from the bullpen.

The Chaps ranked second in the conference in both 2017 (3.63) and 2016 (3.55), reaching the South Central Regional each of those years. Sundlie’s 2017 bullpen once again led the Heartland Conference in saves with 15, and the staff as a whole pitched a conference-leading eight shutouts.

The Ozark, Mo. native originally came to LCU as a student-athlete for the Chaps baseball program. As a catcher, Sundlie was a NAIA All-American in 2005 and was part of the 2006 squad, which qualified for the NAIA World Series. He received his first head coaching gig in the 2010-2011 school term as the head coach of Valley Mills High School in Valley Mills, Texas.  He spent one season there before returning back to LCU to claim a graduate assistant coaching spot while completing a master’s degree. Sundlie was at LCU for two seasons before spending time as the head coach at Abernathy High School in Abernathy, Texas.

Sundlie is married to V’Laura and they have three children (Aubrey, Easton and Slaton).
