LUBBOCK, Texas (March 20, 1971) - Junior pitcher Ray Suarez fired a no-hit, no-run game, his second shutout in two starts, to lead the Lubbock Christian College Chaparrals to an 8-0 victory over Western New Mexico here Saturday.
In the first inning, Suarez walked Don Cisco, who advanced to second on Randy Klingmang's sacrifice, and Doug Ragsdale, but got the next two batters out on ground outs.
The only other time a Mustang batter reached first bas was in the sixth when Cisco got on as a result of third baseman Jim Judah's error.
Suarez fired 10 strikeouts during the game and fanned seven of the last nine batters he faced, five of which were in a row.
Stan Tatum started things off for the Chaparrals in the bottom of the first inning by banging out a double. Henry Garza singled, advancing Tatum to third and he later stole second himself.
Paul Russell, who went three-for-three for the second game in a row, belted a single, scoring Tatum and Garza. Later, Robert Vittitow single Russell home to make it 3-0.
In the second inning, Garza and Lupe Perez walked and then LCC successfully tried a double steal, placing runners on second and third.
Russell stepped up and collected another single, scoring Garza and Perez.
Cecil Richards knocked a slow roller to WNMU pitcher Wayne Lake, but Lake's throw was wild and Richards ran all the way to third in the third inning. Richards scored on a fielder's choice by Garza.
In the fourth, Russell started things off with a single and Lake made his second wild throw to first on Vittitow's grounder as Russell scored and Vittitow advanced to third.
Vittitow scored moments later on a fielder's choice by Tatum.
The game was called after six innings since LCC was ahead by eight runs.
Suarez's record is now 2-0 and the loser for WNMU, White, is now 0-1.
