LAS CRUCES, N.M. (March 27, 1976) - Wayne Aiken won both games and John Harris extended his hitting streak to 33 games as Lubbock Christian went over the 200-mark in victories as a senior college with 5-4 and 3-0 wins over New Mexico State Saturday.
In the opener, LCC broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the ninth and then held off an Aggie rally in the last of the frame to take the triumph.
The Chaps, 30-5, got two unearned runs in the ninth. Kim Nikkel reached base on a fielding error by second baseman Rudy Telles. Keary Bailey then bunted, but catcher Marty Otero's throw to second was wild and both runners were safe.
Shortstop Glenn Wilken doubled both runners home.
The hosts battled bak in the last of the ninth, getting a run when Myron Marquardt walked with the bases loaded, but Aiken got Cliff Olander to ground out with the bases loaded to end the game.
The Chaps took an early lead when Harris and Aiken hit back-to-back pitches for home runs. It was Harris' 13th of the year. In the fifth, Randy Evans got an RBI single for the winners.
A fielder's choice by Marquardt in the first, a sixth-inning single by Olannder and a single by Brian Washington in the seventh scored runs for NMSU.
In the second game, which was called on account of darkness, LCC got a run in the first when Buddy Davis singled and Harris tripled him home.
In the third frame, David Carter Walked and Harris singled him to third. Harris tried to advance to second on the relay throw to third, and third baseman Joe Pacheco's throw to second was wild, allowing Carter to cross the plate.
In the next inning, Gary Olivo reached base on a throwing error by Pacheco at third and later scored on a single by Evans.
This was the first time in LCC history that one pitcher has won both games of a twin bill.
