Gong Show Ends With Bong Show... Chaps Leave Laredo With Golden Goal

LAREDO, Texas (October 11, 2014) – Mbongeni Ndlovu's golden goal in the 103rd minute helped Lubbock Christian University escape The Gateway City with a 3-2 win in double overtime Saturday night in a physical Heartland Conference showdown over Texas A&M International. The win not only helped LCU to a 2-0 start in conference play, but extends their conference win streak to eight games (active Heartland Conference lead) and they improve to 6-0-0 all-time in Heartland Conference road games.

Mbongeni "Bong" Ndlovu was able to score the tap-in game winning goal off a cross from Mitchell Hopkins, who provided his team-leading fourth assist of the season. The goal was Ndlovu's first goal of the season and his third of his LCU career. It was also LCU's seventh all-time golden goal and they are now 7-1-10 all-time in games decided in overtime. Ndlovu's marker was LCU's second ever golden goal in a Heartland Conference contest and their first since Oct. 21, 2013 at Rogers State.

TAMIU entered the game leading the conference with 31 cautions and it was indicative in Saturday's action. The teams combined for 18 cautions for a Chaps single-game program record (prior high was nine). Twelve of the cards were issued to TAMIU (eight yellows and four red cards) and six were shown to LCU (two red and four yellow cards) resulting in the game to end with 18 players on the pitch (LCU had a 10 vs. 8 playing advantage at game's end). Four of the cards were issued to bench personnel.

Lubbock Christian led 2-1 at the half after building a 2-0 lead. Tommy Fogarty-Cameron opened the scoring in the game's 36th minute by chipping in a pass from Ndlovu for his third goal of the season. A little more than five minutes later in the 41st minute, Chase Williams scored his first goal of the season and second of his career for a 2-0 LCU advantage. The Dustdevils bounced back with unassisted goals from Michael Iskander (44th minute) and Eduardo Gonzalez (68th minute) to tie the game at 2-2. Both TAMIU's goals came off rebounds Chaps goalkeeper Tim Saucedo was unable to control.

LCU was out-shot 32-11 in the game and the -21 disadvantage marked the biggest disadvantage leading to a win in program history. Saucedo was busy while improving to 2-0-0 on the season, stopping seven of nine shots on goal. TAMIU, with a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal, had the loss credited to Salomon Moctezuma, who allowed three goals off five shots on goal.

The Chaps improve to 4-3-1 on the season and 2-0-0 in conference play. The win was their first ever over TAMIU. Their only prior meeting came last season, with TAMIU's win over LCU marking the Chaps only Heartland loss en route to a first place finish atop the conference standings. TAMIU is now 5-3-1 on the season and 1-2-0 in conference.  LCU, now unbeaten in four consecutive games (3-0-1), remains on the road Monday and faces St. Mary's University for a Heartland tilt at 2:30 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas.
