SAN ANTONIO, Texas (October 13, 2014) – Lubbock Christian University's Corey Hutchinson enjoyed quite a homecoming Monday afternoon at St. Mary's University's Sigma Beta Chi Field. The Universal City, Texas native scored the game winning goal with 4:39 remaining in regulation and LCU defeated St. Mary's 3-1 to remain perfect (3-0-0) in Heartland Conference play.
Hutchinson, a freshman who played locally for the San Antonio Scorpions Development Academy team, crashed the net and unlocked a 1-1 tie with a header off
Lennard Hansen's long cross for his third goal of the season. Hansen then followed with an insurance goal 1:25 later by taking advantage of a feed from
Mbongeni Ndlovu. Hansen's goal was his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The game was tied after a pair of first half goals. Lee Micklethwaite scored the opening goal for the Rattlers 11:07 into the contest with a long shot with a heavy wind that trickled through the hands of Chaps goalkeeper
Tim Saucedo. LCU matched it in the 21st minute. Ndlovu, coming off a golden goal in LCU's prior contest (at Texas A&M International), took a through pass from Hansen and transitioned the reception into a breakaway and placed the ball past goalkeeper Mitchell Kilmer for his second goal of the season.
Soon after the game was tied, in the 23rd minute, the game's tide would shift. The assistant referee caught Ignacio Fernandez punching a Chap below the belt and Fernandez was presented a red card for his actions. That resulted in the game's remaining 67 minutes played with LCU having an 11-vs.-10 man advantage. The Chaps produced an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal following the card. Saucedo only had to make one save over the final 45:11 of the contest.
Hansen finished with four points in the game with a goal and two assists. His pair of assists matches a program single-game record, which has been completed 19 times. LCU out-shot StMU 18-12 in the contest. Saucedo remained perfect on the season (3-0-0) with the win in goal and he made four saves off five shots on goal faced. Kilmer went to 5-5-2, allowing three goals off nine shots faced in the loss for StMU, who falls to 5-5-2 overall and 1-2-0 in conference.
The win was LCU's first when surrendering the first goal (1-2-1). The Chaps, now 5-3-1 overall and 3-0-0 in conference, have now gone unbeaten in five straight contests (4-0-1) and they remain perfect (7-0-0) all-time on the road in Heartland Conference play. LCU returns home Saturday and will host Rogers State at 2:30 p.m.
