LUBBOCK, Texas (October 18, 2014) – Freshman
Tommy Fogarty-Cameron produced his first multi-goal game of his college career and Lubbock Christian University tied a mark for the second most goals scored at home in program history with a 5-3 victory over Rogers State University Saturday afternoon at a damp LCU Soccer Field. LCU's win keeps them unbeaten in six consecutive games (5-0-1) and they extend the NCAA Div. II's active conference win streak mark to nine consecutive wins.
Lennard Hansen opened the scoring for LCU 7:41 into the contest by converting on a cross from
Chance McCarter for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. RSU tied the game at 1-1 in the 22nd minute with Edward Hubbard tallying his first goal of the season. LCU then surged to a 3-1 lead before the intermis-sion. A shot by
Yuriy Sadula was stopped by goalkeeper Mitchell Penton, but he had trouble corralling the rebound and converged with a defender, who knocked the ball across the goal line for an own-goal. The goal came in the 39th minute. With 55 seconds remaining in the half, Fogarty-Cameron notched his first goal of the game, heading in a set-piece from
Chase Williams.
RSU wasted no time responding in the second half. Danko Kenjic scored a pair of goals 3:20 apart to tie the contest at 3-3. His second, in the 58th minute, was on a set-piece as he sent a rocket into the top-right side of the cage past a frozen
Tim Saucedo. The Hillcats would not have the momentum long, as
Elijah Madzikatire would score on a remarkable play 55 seconds following Kenjic's second goal. Madzikatire stole the ball from a defender, who fell down, at midfield and streaked in for a breakaway. He was chal-lenged by goalkeeper Joey Arnold, who replace Penton at the half, but Madzikatire danced around him and put the ball into the onion basket for a 4-3 lead. Fogarty-Cameron capped the two-goal performance in the 73rd minute by stealing the ball from a defender on a counter and converting for an unassisted breakaway goal.
Fogarty-Cameron finished with four points off his two goals and has five goals on the season. His multi-goal game is the second by a member of the Chaps this season (Hansen has the other). The five goals at home ties for the second most at home in program history behind a nine-goal performance on Sept. 24, 2011. RSU was led in the loss by Kenjic, who had two goals and an assist for a five-point perfor-mance. He produced four of RSU's seven shots on goal. LCU out-shot RSU 20-13, with a 10-7 ad-vantage in shots on goal. The loss went to Arnold, who allowed two goals off four shots faced (0-1-0). Penton had allowed three goals off five shots faced before being replaced. Saucedo remains perfect on the season (4-0-0), as he made four saves in the win.
LCU improves to 6-3-1 overall and they are 4-0-0 in Heartland Conference play. The 4-0-0 start in confer-ence marks their best conference start in program history. RSU fell to 5-8-0 overall and 1-3-0 in confer-ence. LCU remains home Monday and will host Newman University at 2:30 p.m.
