Jets End Chaps Conference Win Streaks

LUBBOCK, Texas (October 20, 2014) – The NCAA Division II's longest active conference win streak end-ed Monday at LCU Soccer Field, as Newman University ended Lubbock Christian University's nine-game Heartland Conference win streak by defeating the Chaparrals 1-0 to hand LCU their first conference loss of the season and end their streak of six unbeaten games.

The loss is LCU's second loss ever in Heartland Conference play (11-2-0) and their first since losing at home to Texas A&M International on Oct. 14, 2013. It is their first Heartland Conference shutout loss in program history and the third time overall they have been shutout this season. The last time LCU was shutout at home was on Sept. 14, 2013 (a 0-0 tie to Huston-Tillotson) and the last time they were shutout at home in a conference game was Oct. 13, 2012 (to John Brown).

LCU had scored 22 goals in the prior six games leading up to game and the matchup featured the top two offensive teams (based on average goals per game) in the Heartland Conference. That said, the only ball ending up in the back of the net was recorded by Taylor Henry, who recorded his third goal of the season with 39 minutes to go in regulation. LCU had plenty of chances for the equalizer, holding a 5-0 advantage in shots on goal following Henry's goal. The Chaps produced four shots on goal in the final nine minutes. Newman goalkeeper Steven Hamersky stopped all but the final two shots, which LCU was able to get past him, but he was bailed out each time by a defender clearing the ball off the line to keep the Chaps off the scoreboard.

Mitchell Hopkins and Corey Hutchison were each denied three times with shots on goal. Newman out-shot LCU 17-15, including a 12-6 advantage in the first half, but LCU had an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. Chaps goalkeeper Tim Saucedo suffered the loss allowing one goal on the four shots. It was his first loss of the season (4-1-0). Hamersky was solid improving his season mark to 5-2-1, stopping all six shots he faced.

LCU falls to 4-1-0 in conference and they are 6-4-1 overall. The loss was their first since Sept.15 at Mid-western State. Newman improved to 3-2-0 in conference and they are 9-4-1 overall. LCU plays their final conference home game Saturday, hosting St. Edward's University at 2:30 p.m.
