Chaps Fall Short Against Ranked Hilltoppers

LUBBOCK, Texas (October 25, 2014) – A young Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals squad battled and tried to hang with No.16 St. Edward's University, but a goal by Steve Aoudou in the 63rd minute would be the difference in a 2-1 victory over the Chaps Saturday afternoon in Heartland Conference play at LCU Soccer Field. The Chaps, who had one all-time loss in the Heartland Conference play prior to Monday, have now suffered consecutive conference losses for the first time (both by one goal).

The two teams were scoreless until the 49th minute when an "own goal" led to the opening goal of the game. A cross off a set-piece sent into the box led to a clear attempt by LCU putting the ball into their own net. Aoudou made it 2-0 SEU in the 63rd minute. He received a pass from Josh Taylor at the top of the box and put a shot on goal past the LCU defense and a less-than-100% Tim Saucedo for Aoudou's first goal of the season.

LCU didn't give up late. Chase Williams danced around atop the box and put a solid left-foot shot on frame and he was able to get it past goalkeeper Kevin Leib for his second goal of the season. It was one of two shots on goal for LCU and he recorded just the ninth goal allowed this season by the Hilltoppers (14th game). The goal was scored in the 86th minute and LCU would run out of time for any comeback bid.

SEU extended their unbeaten streak to 11 games (10-0-1) with the win. They also ended LCU's three-game all-time win streak against ranked opponents. LCU is now 3-4-1 all-time against ranked foes. LCU was out-shot 19-10 in the game, with SEU having a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal. Saucedo suffered the loss (4-2-0), stopping eight of the 10 shots faced. Leib improved to 11-2-1 stopping one of two shots in the win.

LCU, now 6-5-1 overall, has lost four of their five losses by a one-goal margin. They fall to 4-2-0 in the Heartland Conference. SEU is 11-2-1 overall and 5-0-0 in conference. The Chaps will aim to end a two-game skid Nov.1 in Oklahoma City, facing Oklahoma Christian University. Saturday's contest against SEU was LCU's final conference home game of the season.
