LAREDO, Texas (October 11, 2014) – Lubbock Christian University continued a trend Saturday night at Dustdevil Soccer Field, as they defeated Texas A&M International 2-0 to remain unbeaten in Heartland Conference play.
The win marks the third consecutive season in which LCU has opened conference play 2-0, but it is the first time they have opened up with consecutive shutout wins in conference. LCU's defense has held opponents to three shots on goal in the two games, and goalkeeper
Lauren Story stopped both shots Saturday for her fifth shutout of the season and her third in the last four games. She has only allowed one goal in the last four games and has extended her career program lead in shutouts to 12. Her active shutout sequence on the season is at 194:45 (second longest of the season).
LCU scored both of their goals in the first half and scored them 2:04 apart. Freshman
Claudia Sanchez placed LCU on top for good in the 43rd minute with her second goal in conference play and seventh goal overall on the season. She was set up on the goal by
Jamie Boone, who contributed her team-leading fifth assist of the season. In the 45th minute,
Brooke Wendl put a shot on frame too hot for goalkeeper Chelsea Knaack to handle for her conference and team-leading ninth goal of the season. Wendl's goal was her program career best 32nd goal of her career.
The Lady Chaparrals out-shot the Dustdevils 16-6 overall and had an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal. Knaack made nine saves in the loss in goal (4-4-1), while Story improved to 7-2-0 on the season.
The shutout win was LCU's fifth shutout win of the season and it improves their record to 7-3-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference. TAMIU suffered their first shutout loss of the season and falls to 4-4-1 overall and 2-1-0 in conference. LCU continues their first road trip in Heartland Conference play Monday facing St. Mary's University Monday at noon in San Antonio, Texas.
