Wendl Helps Lady Chaps Rattle and Roll To Sixth Straight Win

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (October 13, 2014) – Brooke Wendl registered her 10th career multi-goal game of her collegiate career and her two goals were the difference for Lubbock Christian University ending St. Mary's University's six-game win streak with a 3-1 Heartland Conference victory Monday afternoon at windy Sigma Beta Chi Field.

Each team entered the contest without conceding a goal in conference play, and St. Mary's (four games) and LCU (two games) were riding long shutout sequences defensively, but the sequences would end. St. Mary's sequence would end on Claudia Sanchez's eighth goal of the season 8:20 into the contest. Her goal from 25-yards out not only extended her goal scoring streak to four games, but also ended StMU's shutout sequence at 410:51. LCU would lead 1-0 at the half. Rachel Gurinsky tied the game at 1-1 2:24 into the second half with a shot from the right side the whistled into the top right corner of the cage. The goal ended LCU's conference shutout sequence at 327:34 (carrying over from last season) and LCU's overall shutout sequence at 242:09 (all with Lauren Story) for the second longest shutout sequence of the season.

With the shutouts off the docket, it was Wendl's time to shine. Her first goal of the game came in the 60th minute off a quick sequence. Sanchez one-timed a touch pass from Jamie Pugh and Wendl redirected it for the 2-1 lead. Under 20 minutes later in the 79th minute, Wendl would add an insurance marker for her 11th goal of the season and her 34th of her LCU career.

Wendl's pair of goals marks her third multi-goal game of the season and her 10th of her career. Her first goal of the game turned out to be her fifth game winning goal of the season and her 12th of her career.

LCU out-shot StMU 26-12 (15-7 advantage in shots on goal) in the game and had a 12-4 advantage in the second half. Story made six saves off seven shots on goal and earned the win to improve to 8-2-0 on the season. Alyssa Taramona faced 11 of the 15 LCU shots on goal and stopped eight. She took the loss and dropped to 7-5-0 on the season. The trio of goals has LCU with a total of 31 on the season. They scored 28 all of last season.

The win extends LCU's win streak to five games overall, and they are now 3-0-0 in conference play. They improve to 6-1-0 all-time in Heartland Conference road games. StMU drops to 7-5-0 overall and 3-1-0 in conference with the loss. LCU returns home Saturday to host Rogers State University at noon.
