LUBBOCK, Texas (October 18, 2014) – For a second consecutive game,
Brooke Wendl recorded a two-goal game, and her two goals helped Lubbock Christian University defeat Rogers State University 3-2 Saturday afternoon in Heartland Conference play at LCU Soccer Field. The win keeps the Lady Chapar-rals perfect (4-0-0) in conference play and extends their win streak to six games.
It appeared LCU would take advantage of a winless Rogers State squad early, as
Claudia Sanchez scored just 21 seconds into the contest. The goal, set up by quick passes from
Audra Park and
Brooke Wendl, was the freshman's ninth goal of the season. Rogers State would answer off an LCU mishap. In the seventh minute, LCU goalkeeper
Lauren Story inadvertently kicked the ball to RSU's Blair Thomas, who cashed in for an easy fifth goal of the season.
Wendl contributed a pair of goals in the second half. Her first helped LCU regain the lead at 2-1 and was tallied in the 34th minute. She completed her 11th career multi-goal game and her fourth of the season in the 62nd minute with a goal off a corner kick attempt. Wendl bent the corner kick past goalkeeper Teri Cocke for her 13th goal of the season and 35th of her LCU career (LCU's career leader). Her second goal would prove to be important, as Carley Johnson made things interesting with her first goal of the season in the 70th minute, cutting LCU's lead to 3-2.
LCU's defense would tighten up over the final 20 minutes and RSU would be prevented from a shot at-tempt towards the equalizer. LCU out-shot RSU 14-7 and had a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Wendl produced four of LCU's seven shots on goal, finishing with five points off a pair of goals and an assist. She was also credited with the game winning goal, which has her tied for second in the nation with six and extending her program career-leading mark to 13. Story claimed the win (9-2-0) stopping two of four shots. Cocke suffered the loss for RSU (0-13-0), making four saves off seven shots faced.
LCU improved to 9-3-0 overall and 4-0-0 in Heartland Conference play. RSU remains without a win on the season and falls to 0-13-0. They have lost 16 consecutive games. LCU will aim to extend their six-game win streak Monday at noon hosting Newman University.
