LUBBOCK, Texas (October 25, 2014) – In two seconds, a conference undefeated record can come to an abrupt ending. Lubbock Christian University found that out the heartbreaking way Saturday afternoon at LCU Soccer Field, as Mikayla Engel's cross not only ended up on goal, but into the back of the net with two seconds left in regulation to allow Saint Edward's University to escape with a 2-1 win over LCU in a battle between the only previously undefeated teams in Heartland Conference play.
As time was running out in regulation, Engel was streaking down the left side and was attempting to feed a cross to Lauren Heller streaking through the backside. The cross not only led Heller too much, but the climactic rolling ball froze LCU goalkeeper
Lauren Story, who misjudged the cross and could not stop it diving to her left. It was Engel's first goal of the season and one she won't forget, as it left LCU head coach
Alex Denning and the rest of the Lady Chaps bewildered.
LCU was right with the Hilltoppers, who entered the game riding a four-game win streak and with a stingy defense that had only allowed seven goals through their 12 prior games played. The Lady Chaps were outshot 13-11 overall and by a 7-5 margin in shots on goal.
The game was scoreless for the opening 62 minutes. Gracen Jacks ended the scoreless drought in the 63rd minute with her fifth goal of the season for SEU. She crashed the net, sliding in and jousting a loose ball with her boot for the goal. The ball was loose after Story was unable to grasp a rebound from stopping Jennifer Boudreau's initial shot.
The Lady Chaps wasted no time tying the contest.
Claudia Sanchez notched a goal for a seventh consecutive game, scoring on a powerful header 49 seconds following Jacks' goal.
Jamie Boone chased down a long pass from
Brooke Wendl and sent a cross from the right side. Sanchez met the cross perfectly from the left side and headed it home for her 11th goal of the season. The goal was the eighth goal allowed by SEU this season and ended their shutout sequence at 261:54.
Story suffered the tough-luck loss, stopping five of seven shots on goal and fell to 10-3-0. Lorrie Santoy took the win by stopping four of five shots for SEU to improve to 9-4-0.
The loss ended LCU's seven-game win streak. It was their first loss since Sept. 21 (at East Central), and it was their first conference loss (5-1-0) of the season. They are now 10-4-0 overall, while SEU improved to 9-4-0 overall and 5-0-0 in conference. LCU also falls to 0-3-0 this season when allowing the opening goal of the game.
The game was LCU's final home game of the season and it Senior Day. They honored senior
Coree Childree following the game. LCU ends the home portion of their schedule with a 5-2-0 mark. They look to rebound Tuesday in Alva, Okla. facing Northwestern Oklahoma State in non-conference action.
