LUBBOCK, Texas (October 6, 2014) – Lubbock Christian University opened their Heartland Conference schedule with a 2-0 home win over University of Texas of the Permian Basin Monday at LCU Soccer Field to remain perfect all-time (5-0-0) in conference openers.
The Lady Chaparrals took the lead early in the contest with
Jamie Boone scoring the opening goal 1:41 into the game. The goal was unassisted, as Boone awaited a volley off the head of a defender and scissor kicked the ball from the top of the box and past goalkeeper Ebony Campbell. The game remained 1-0 until
Claudia Sanchez's insurance goal in the 72nd minute made it 2-0. Sanchez benefitted off the play of
Audra Park and
Brooke Wendl, as a drop pass in the box and a shot resulted in Sanchez capitalizing with the rebound. The goals for Boone and Sanchez were each their sixth of the season.
LCU controlled the game's tempo, out-shooting UTPB 23-8, with a 15-1 advantage in shots on goal. They had a 12-1 advantage in shots in the second half alone. Campbell was busy in goal and stopped 13 of LCU's 15 shots on goal. She fell to 1-6-1 on the season. Story had the clean sheet despite not making a save. The only LCU save was a defensive clearing by
Jessica Barrera on Ashley Redwine's shot while Story was out of goal. Story improves to 6-2-0 with the win, and the shutout was her fourth of the season and 11th of her LCU career (program record).
UTPB has now been shutout in seven of their nine games this season and in four consecutive contests. Their goalless sequence was extended to 388:01 overall and 384:31 on the road. They are now 1-7-1 overall on the season and 0-1-0 in conference play.
The win was LCU's fourth shutout win of the season and the third consecutive shutout win all-time against UTPB. LCU is now 6-3-0 on the season and winners of three straight contests for a second time this season. They are 1-0-0 to open Heartland Conference play, which continues Saturday night at 5 p.m. in Laredo, Texas against Texas A&M International.
