DALLAS (November 3, 2014) –
Lennard Hansen capped his second hat trick of the season 16 seconds into overtime to help Lubbock Christian University escape Patriot Field with a 3-2 Heartland Conference victory over Dallas Baptist University. LCU closed out their conference play with a 6-2-0 record and they remain unbeaten all-time (9-0-0) in Heartland Conference road play.
Hansen scored the game winning goal sliding into the six-yard box to play a cross placed in by
Mitchell Hopkins. It was LCU's eighth all-time overtime goal (now 8-1-10 all-time in overtime games) and the second this season (2-0-1 in overtimes this season). Their prior overtime game winning goal was scored by
Mbongeni Ndlovu in the Chaps first conference road game this season (at Texas A&M International).
On Sept. 25, Hansen became the second Chaps individual to notch a hat trick in program history and he has the Chaps only two of the season. His against DBU is the fifth recorded in program history. Two of the goals were assisted by Hopkins for a two-assist performance, which is his second of the season and matches a program single game record (20th time completed).
His first two goals provided LCU a 2-0 lead in the contest. His first, in the 26th minute, was produced off a header fed by Mitchell for the half's only goal. Hansen's second came unassisted in the 52nd minute of play.
DBU surged back and changed the momentum off a penalty kick in the 69th minute. A LCU foul in the box led to a penalty kick conversion by David Balyeat to erase any LCU hopes of a clean sheet. Nearly 10 minutes later in the 79th minute, Nathan McBride tied the contest at 2-2, leading to Hansen's heroics.
LCU improved to 6-1-0 when scoring first and 5-0-0 when leading at halftime. They led in shots on goal (6-5), but overall shot totals were led by DBU (16-10). DBU had a 7-2 advantage in second half corner kicks.
Tim Saucedo improved to 6-2-0 with the win, as the Chaps goalkeeper stopped three of five shots. The loss went to Mason Stringer, who allowed three of six shots faced for DBU. The Patriots fell to 3-14-1 overall and 0-8-0 in conference.
The contest was the final conference game of the season for LCU, who ends conference play 6-2-0 and tied with Newman for the second best conference record (would have been the No.3 seed in the conference tournament if postseason eligible). LCU's starting line-up included seven freshmen and three returning players from last season's first place conference squad.
The Chaps (8-5-1) season does continue with a pair of non-conference games. They play their final home game Thursday hosting West Texas A&M for Senior Day before closing out the season Sunday in Portales, N.M. against Eastern New Mexico.
