Chaps Hosting Home Opener Thursday

LUBBOCK, Texas (September 11, 2014) – The Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals open their home schedule of their 2014 schedule Thursday at 3 p.m., as they host University of the Southwest (N.M.) at LCU Soccer Field.  

CHAPS FLIGHT DECK
•    The Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals are 1-1-0 on the season after splitting play at the Days Inn Classic hosted by Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. The Chaps opened play with a 2-1 loss to Drury, but rebounded with a 1-0 win Saturday against Colorado State University – Pueblo.
•     The Chaps are 4-0-0 all-time in home openers and all have been against Southwest (N.M.).
•     LCU is 5-3-1 in home games last season and 21-8-4 all-time at home.

STORY LINES
•    The Chaparrals win Saturday led to the first win of the season and the first career coaching victory for interim head coach Lee Williams.
•    The Chaps went 5-3-1 at home last season and were led in scoring at home by Billy Forbes, who had nine goals and four assists for 22 points. The leading scorer at home still on the roster this season is Mbongeni Ndlova, who had a goal and two assists for four points in five home games.
•    Four out of five of last season's home wins were by a shutout. LCU was also shutout three times at home, as six of the nine home games last season ended in a shutout result.
•    Speaking of shutouts, LCU goalkeeper Tristan Putnam stopped all eight shots faced Sunday against CSU-Pueblo and recorded his first collegiate win and shutout. On the week, the freshman goalkeeper stopped 17 of 19 shots. Last season, Erik Mozzo recorded seven shutouts and the team produced eight.
•    Freshman Darius Strambler was solid Sunday and scored the lone goal in the 1-0 win. He produced six shots, with five on goal. Included in the mix was a goal in the opening minute of the second half, which held up as the game winning goal.   
•    LCU made a jump in shots on goal Sunday against CSU-Pueblo. After a low of four shots Friday in their opener, LCU produced 18 shots Sunday. They did improve their program worse -19 shots disadvantage to -7, and had an even mark 9-9 in shots on goal in comparison to CSU-Pueblo.

SCOUTING USW
•    The Mustangs have had a taste of everything this season and come to Lubbock with a 1-1-1 mark. Their prior game resulted in a 3-3 tie to Texas-Permian Basin.
•    USW is playing their fourth straight game on the road and they open the season playing six of their first eight games on the road.
•    Members of the Red River Athletic Conference, USW is one of two NAIA programs on the LCU schedule this season. They will play Southwestern Christian on Sept. 20.
•    The Mustangs are under a new direction this season, as Robert Ssejjemba takes over for his first season as head coach of USW. He joined USW from Virginia Intermont College.
•    Edrian Negrete and Luis Romero each co-lead USW with two goals and four points on the season.

SERIES HISTORY WITH USW
•    LCU is 5-0-1 all-time against USW and 4-0 at home.
•   The Chaps have an 18-4 scoring advantage in the all-time series and has a pair of shutouts.
•   The prior meeting was on Sept. 5 of last season, as LCU defeated USW 6-1 in the season opener.
