Mother Nature and Mustangs Ruin Chaps Home Opener

Box Score LUBBOCK, Texas (September 11, 2014) – Rain was not the only thing placing a damper on Lubbock Christian University. Two second half goals 1:38 apart lifted University of the Southwest (N.M.) to a 3-2 victory over Lubbock Christian University Thursday afternoon. Technically the game was the home debut for the Chaparrals, but a morning downpour moved the game to Texas Tech's John Walker Soccer Complex.

LCU out-played the Mustangs in the opening half, but it was USW with a 1-0 lead after the first 45 minutes. USW was held to two shots on goal in the half and the first resulted in a goal by Edrian Negrete in the 37th minute for his third goal of the season. LCU out-shot USW 9-6 in the half and had a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. USW goalkeeper Brandon Rodriguez denied the Chaps on five of the shots and the one he did not stop was kicked off the line by a defender.

The Chaps finally got one into the back of the net in the start of the second half. Just 1:46 into the second half, Lennard Hansen tied the contest with his first goal of the season. The game would only remain tied for a little more than five minutes, as USW would combine with goals from Luis Romero (53rd minute) and Jorge Orona (54th minute) 1:38 apart for a 3-1 USW lead.

Mitchell Hopkins cut the LCU deficit to 3-2 with 2:23 remaining. Cameron Lugo sent a long cross into the box to a streaking Hopkins, who headed it home for his first goal of the season. LCU had a chance for the equalizer, as Corey Hutchison broke through the defense to receive a pass, but the play was whistled dead for one of five offside infractions against the Chaps.

LCU out-shot USW 26-14 and had a 10-5 shots on goal advantage. Rodriguez improved to 1-0-1 in goal by stopping seven of nine shots faced for the win. Putnam was only able to stop two of the five shots he was up against.

The Chaparrals had their record fall to 1-2-0 with the loss, while USW improved to 2-1-1. It was LCU's first ever home opening loss (4-1-0) and their first ever loss to USW (5-1-1). The Chaps hit the road Monday and face Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas. MSU was preseason ranked No.12, but is currently receiving votes after falling out of the top-25.
