Mustangs Power Past Chaps

Box Score WICHITA FALLS, Texas (September 15, 2014) – Andrew Power had a pair of second half goals and Midwestern State University handed Lubbock Christian University a 4-0 shutout loss Monday evening at MSU Soccer Field. The contest was LCU's first true road game of the season.

The Mustangs entered the game being outscored by their opponents by a 4-1 advantage in the second half, but the stat didn't stay true on this evening. Corey Hutchison was seeking the equalizer for LCU in the 46th minute, after the Chaps surrendered a goal to Call Casarez off a header in the 14th minute, but Nick Petolick made a key save and it was the Mustangs the rest of the way. Power produced his first goal off a cross in the 51st minute to extend the lead to 2-0, and another cross into the box led to a foul in the box on Callum Chapman-Page and a penalty kick conversion for Len Smith for a 3-0 lead in the 73rd minute to put the game out of reach. The two-goal game for Power was completed with a goal in the 86th minute. He has six goals on the season and has a goal in four straight games.

The Chaps were out-shot 23-7, but were only out-shot 5-4 in shots on goal. They were unable to use that to their benefit, as the Mustangs scored four goals on the five shots put on frame, leading to just one save for Chaps goalkeeper Tristen Putnam (1-3-0). Petolick (3-1-0) stopped all four LCU shots on goal for his second straight clean sheet and his 11th of his MSU career. LCU did not have one individual with more than one shot in the game, and MSU had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Couple of streaks carrying over from last season came to an end in the game. LCU's five game road win streak came to an end, and the goal by Casarez ended LCU's road shutout sequence at 217:50. The loss was LCU's first road shutout loss since Nov. 3, 2012 (at Wayland Baptist) and the four-goal loss differential was LCU's worse since falling 4-0 on Nov. 10, 2011 (at University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma).

LCU falls to 1-3-0 on the season, while Midwestern State, who is receiving votes in the NSCAA Top-25 Poll, improves to 3-1-0. The game was LCU's first ever meeting with the Mustangs. The Chaps return home Saturday and look to put a two-game losing skid to rest while hosting Southwestern Christian University at 2 p.m.
