Box Score ODESSA, Texas (September 25, 2014) –
Lennard Hansen's goal in the 77th minute capped a hat trick and a span of three Lubbock Christian University goals in a span of nearly 12 minutes in the second half to lead the Chaparrals to a 6-3 non-conference road win over University of Texas of the Permian Basin Thursday evening.
Hansen became just the second individual in program history to record at least three goals in a game for the Chaps. Former Chap
Billy Forbes had three games with at least three goals or more, marking Hansen's hat trick as the fourth recorded in program history. Hansen's three goals wasn't the only thing reaching for the record books. LCU's six goals tied the program's second highest single game mark for goals (fifth time), and they had five assists off the goals, which tied for third most in program history (third time). The combo equaled 17 points for the fourth most in LCU history. The last time LCU scored six goals in a game was on Oct. 26 at McMurry, and the last time a player notched a hat trick was on Sept. 5, 2013 against University of the Southwest (Forbes).
LCU wasted no time garnering the game's first goal.
Corey Hutchison, making his first start of the season, scored his first goal of the season via a header off a cross from
Callum Chapman-Page 4:18 into the game. Hansen made it 2-0 with his first goal of the game in the 36th minute, as him and Tommy Fogarty were able to produce the goal off a steal leading to a breakaway. Nathan Cotterell cut LCU's lead in half 32 seconds later with the Falcons first goal. The Chaps quickly answered back with Hansen scoring over four minutes later with his second tally of the game for a 3-1 lead, which is the lead LCU had at the half.
The Falcons rallied back in the second half. Logan Sharp and Cotterell combined for goals 1:56 apart beginning in the 59th minute to tie the contest at 3-3. The quick combination of goals did not rattle the Chaparrals on the road, as
Darius Strambler set up
Tristan Wehner for a go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal in the 65th minute (4:08 after UTPB tied the game). Wehner's marker, his first of the season, began a trio of goals in a span of 11:56. Fogarty had the insurance goal before Hansen completed his hat trick and the game's scoring.
Mitchell Hopkins produced a pair of assists in the win to tie LCU's single-game record for assists (18th time the task has been completed). Hansen, with three goals off three shots, ended the game with six points. The Chaps, with a 13-6 shot advantage in the second half, had a 20-13 advantage in shots in the game and had an 11-5 advantage in shots on target. LCU had both of their goalkeepers see action, as
Tristen Putnam started and played nearly 82 minutes and stopped one of four shots faced while earning the win (2-3-0).
Tim Saucedo played the final eight minutes and made one save on the only shot he faced. Eric Beltran took the loss in net for UTPB (1-4-1) and stopped five of 11 shots faced.
LCU snapped a two game losing streak with the win and improved to 2-3-0 on the season. They were playing in their first game since Sept. 15. UTPB suffered their fourth straight setback and are 1-4-1. Mother Nature has prevented LCU from playing a game on their own home field, but they are scheduled to return home Thursday to host Eastern New Mexico.
