Box Score HAYS, Kan. (September 5, 2014) – Drury University tallied a pair of goals 50 seconds apart to erase Lubbock Christian University's 1-0 lead and the Panthers handed the Chaparrals a 2-1 loss to open the 2014 season. The loss, at the Days Inn Classic hosted by Fort Hays State University, marks LCU's first season opening loss.
The Chaps were playing on their heels much of the match, as they were outshot 23-4 in the game. Despite being outshot 11-0 in the first half, the Chaps held the Panthers off the scoreboard. They finally garnered some shots in the second half and claimed a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute.
Stewart MacDonell, the lone senior in the Chaps starting lineup, tallied the goal off a feed from
Mbongeni Ndlovu. Just over four minutes later, the Panthers would finally be rewarded. Alec Nagel, who had a game-high four shots, scored an unassisted goal in the 56th minute to tie the game at 1-1. The game-winner was registered 50 seconds later with Brett Steere playing a rebound past Chaps goalkeeper
Tristen Putnam.
All four of LCU's shots would turn out on goal. Logan Ponche stopped three of the shots to claim the win for Drury (1-0-0). Putnam was busy in goal, stopping nine of 11 shots on goal, but suffered the loss (0-1-0) in his LCU debut.
The Chaps, 0-1-0, are now 4-1-0 all-time in season openers and 1-2-0 in neutral site contests all-time. Drury, once an original member of the Heartland Conference, opens the season 1-0-0. The game marked the coaching debut of
Lee Williams, who was named interim head coach of the Chaps last month after Matt Barnes stepped down. LCU remains at FHSU Soccer Stadium Sunday to face Colorado State University – Pueblo at 11:00 a.m.
