DALLAS, Texas (October 10, 2015) – A four-set Lubbock Christian University loss to Dallas Baptist Saturday afternoon at the Burg Center pushed the Lady Chaparrals down into fourth place in the Heartland Conference standings and moved the Patriots into third at the midway point of league play while also ending LCU's five-match win streak, despite four Lady Chaps totaling double-digit kill performances and a double-double by
Mallory Powell.
Entering the match, LCU (10-7, 5-3 Heartland) and DBU (10-4, 6-2 Heartland) sat tied for the third spot with the conference in a league where only the four top teams advance to the postseason. The Lady Chaps also had history in their favor, as LCU held a 28-2 all-time series edge over the Patriots, but DBU has now collected two of their three wins within the past three seasons in the 32-year old rivalry.
In the four-set loss (25-17, 25-27, 21-25, 17-25)
Emily Hanaway led the Lady Chaps with 14 kills,
Ariel Froeschl tied her career-high of 13 for the second consecutive match,
Christiana Tavo recorded a dozen and
Maddie Johnson added 11. Powell notched her 12
th double-double on the year with a game-high 46 assists and 17 digs.
An impressive 10-0 run in set one brought the Lady Chaps from a 14-11 deficit to lead 21-14 in which Hanaway served three aces in her 10 straight service attempts. A kill by DBU closed the gap to 21-17, but LCU held to earn the set win.
The second set contained 10 ties where neither team led by more than two points throughout. A deep kill by Johnson gave the Lady Chaps a 22-20 cushion, but a ball handling error was called on Powell, the Heartland Setter of the Week, to give the Patriots a point. A pair of LCU attack errors allowed DBU to squeak ahead, 24-23, but the Lady Chaps regained their advantage on kills from Hanaway and Deterding. The Patriots fired off two kills to reach set point before another LCU attack error tied the match at 1-1.
The Lady Chaps scored the first point of set three but were unable to amass another lead to drop the set and put DBU up 2-1 in the match. In set four, LCU pulled ahead at 6-4 on a block by Hanaway and Deterding, but the Patriots quickly took control, leading by as much as eight and winning by the same margin for the match victory.
For DBU, Carly Hess and Sidnee Jo Fitzpatrick each tallied 14 kills.
The Lady Chaps are back at home next week to host St. Mary's Thursday at 7 p.m. and Texas A&M International Saturday at noon.
