Mallory Powell supplied a game-high 34 assists in a 3-0 win (25-21, 25-19, 26-24) over Midwestern State Tuesday night inside D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Lady Chaps (18-9, 10-5 Heartland) fell into an early 6-1 disadvantage and trailed at 16-12 before making a comeback. A Deterding kill sparked seven straight points by LCU to take a 19-16 lead. A 3-0 run followed by four successive points placed the Lady Chaps at set point before a kill by Hanaway put LCU up 1-0.
In set two, a pair of kills by
Christiana Tavo helped the Lady Chaps to a 4-1 lead, but three straight errors allowed MSU (6-24, 0-14 Lone Star) to tie the set at 8-all. Two Deterding kills put LCU in front, 16-12, allowing the Lady Chaps to keep the lead as
Ariel Froeschl put the set away on a kill.
Deterding provided four kills within the first seven points of set three to put LCU up 6-1, but the Mustangs pieced together a 6-2 run to tie the score at 8-8. Two MSU attack errors gave the Lady Chaps a 20-15 edge, but the Mustangs came back to tie the set at 22-22. A kill by MSU's Addison Semer put her team at set point, but kills by Hanaway and Deterding turned the frame into the favor of the Lady Chaps, and the same duo came through with a block to earn the three-game sweep.
The Lady Chaps play their final regular season match Thursday at Oklahoma Panhandle State before heading to Arkansas-Fort Smith for the conference tournament November 20-21.
