Senior Night triumph for Lady Chaps

LUBBOCK, Texas (November 5, 2015) – A match victory for the Lubbock Christian University volleyball team on Senior Night was fittingly anchored by outside hitters Maddie Johnson and Kacey Deterding at the net and defensive specialists Malori Maddox and Kyleigh Lucia in the back row in the 3-0 defeat (25-14, 25-14, 25-15) of St. Edward's Thursday night inside the Rip Griffin Center.

Johnson compiled a game-high 13 kills while Deterding added nine, and Maddox and Lucia combined for 16 digs during their final week of home matches. Mallory Powell registered a double-double with game-highs of 35 assists and 12 digs. Tonight's LCU win was met with a Dallas Baptist loss to place both teams with a 9-5 record in conference play to make Saturday's matchup very significant in terms of seeding for the conference tournament in two weeks.

The Lady Chaps (16-9, 9-5 Heartland) set the tone of the match by opening the evening on a 10-2 run. Kills by Ariel Froeschl and Johnson extended the margin to double-digits, and six straight kills by the crew of Froeschl, Johnson and Christiana Tavo opened the set up to 19-4. A kill by Emily Hanaway put LCU at set point, 24-9, but the Hilltoppers were able to rattle off five points before an SEU attack error gave the Lady Chaps the win.

A pair of kills by Johnson and a service ace by Maddox gave LCU three quick points in the second stanza. Froeschl tallied a kill and block alongside Tavo to push the lead to 9-3, and a service ace by Powell upped the advantage to 18-10. Back-to-back kills by Emily Hanaway and Deterding gave the Lady Chaps a double-digit lead at 23-13 before another Deterding kill and a block by Johnson and Hanaway finished the frame.

The Hilltoppers (7-18, 5-9 Heartland) jumped ahead 5-3 on a kill by Mikayla Grill, but the Lady Chaps responded with a trio of kills and a pair of blocks to take an 8-5 lead. Two SEU attack errors increased the opening to 11-6, and four straight points doubled up the lead at 14-7. A string of four LCU errors and a Hilltopper kill pulled SEU to within 17-14, but Tavo threw down two kills to spur a 5-0 Lady Chap run that led to a block and two kills to finalize the match victory.

The Lady Chaps host DBU in a three/four-seed showdown Saturday at noon.
