Grand slam by Torres seals win over UCCS

LAS VEGAS (February 14, 2015) – Eight of Lubbock Christian's nine runs were attributed to blasts over the left center field fence in a 9-0 LCU victory over UC-Colorado Springs Saturday afternoon at the Desert Stinger Tournament to bring the Lady Chaps' record to 2-1 for the weekend with a final pair of games remaining tomorrow.

Sydney Beuthien and Katlin Reed each registered a two-run homer, and Liz Torres completed the game with a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the sixth. Pitcher Courtney McGee was solid in the circle, piecing together the first Lady Chap shutout by allowing just three hits to go along with five strikeouts.

Faith Koria earned a walk on the first LCU (6-1) at bat when Beuthien brought her around on a deep shot over the scoreboard for an early 2-0 Lady Chap advantage. UCCS (2-1) was able to put together some offense in the third frame with a Whitney Weber single to shortstop and a walk to Tressa Radach. Each Mountain Lion advanced a base on a passed ball, but consecutive groundouts to third base ended any scoring opportunity within the inning.

Pam Pence was nailed by a pitch to place her on first in the bottom of the fourth before Reed sent her ball sailing to double LCU's lead to 4-0. The Mountain Lions again placed a runner in scoring position on a double by Nikki Hoffman that careened off of Jessica Loiacano's glove, but the next three UCCS batters were retired, leaving Hoffman stranded.

In the sixth, Koria got the Lady Chap offense rolling with a bunt single before making her way to second on a Mountain Lion throwing error. A Beuthien groundout allowed Koria to scoot to third before Ashton Bell walked and stole second to load the bases. An RBI single by Loiacano scored Koria for a 5-0 LCU lead, while pinch hitter Jenny Rigney stole second and Molly Davison made her way to first on a walk, setting up the walk-off grand slam by Torres.

The Lady Chaps wrap up the Desert Stinger with a double header, facing Fort Lewis at 1:30 p.m. and Black Hills State a 4 p.m. CST.
