SAN ANGELO, Texas (February 15, 2015) – The Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals continued to struggle generating offense and Angelo State University completed a three-game sweep with a 4-1 win over the Chaparrals Sunday afternoon at Foster Field.
LCU, with 74 runs through the prior six games before entering the series, were held to three runs off 15 hits in the series. ASU pitchers held LCU to only two hits in the series (on 29 opportunities) with runners on base and they were 0-for-14 in the series with runners in scoring position. The three runs in the series is the least amount of runs LCU has scored in a three-game series during 12th-year head coach
Nathan Blackwood's tenure at LCU. The sweep marks the first time LCU was swept since a four-game series sweep to Oklahoma City in April of 2013, which also marks the last four-game losing streak.
Sunday, LCU fell behind early, with ASU scoring an unearned run in the second inning and Derek Tyner's double in the third inning placing the Rams up 2-0. They led 3-0 before LCU generated their first run.
Hunter McFall, who had two of LCU's five hits, produced an RBI-double to left centerfield in the top of the sixth inning for LCU's lone run. Cody Semler homered for ASU to get the run back in the seventh inning. LCU, stranding nine runners, left the bases loaded in the eighth inning and could not get any closer.
Levi Westerlund fell to 1-2 with the loss. He allowed two earned runs off five hits in six innings and struck out five batters. Bryce Zak (2-1) claimed the win and allowed one run on three hits and struck out six batters over five innings. Nehwon Norkeh, who hit a home run in the fifth for ASU, co-led the Rams in hits with Tyner and J.C. Snyder (they each went 2-for-4).
The Chaps, 5-4 overall and 0-3 on the road, return home Tuesday at 5 p.m. to host Wayland Baptist University in attempt to end their four-game skid.
