Chaps Sweep Doubleheader To Help Blackwood Notch 500th Coaching Win

Blackwood Becomes Second LCU Coach To Eclipse 500 Wins

LUBBOCK, Texas (March 6, 2015) – Lubbock Christian University completes a Heartland Conference doubleheader sweep over Newman University Friday at Hays Field with a 14-3 and 8-1 victory to give Chaparrals head coach Nathan Blackwood 500 career victories.

LCU never trailed on the day and opened the first game with a three-run first inning. Josh Powe highlighted the inning with a two-run double. Newman came back with a run in the third inning and Andrew Standish led off the fourth inning with a double to cut the deficit to 3-2. LCU put the comeback thoughts behind with Brett Wilhelm and Hunter McFall each driving in runs for a two run bottom of the fourth inning for a 5-2 lead. Shane Crawford doubled in a run in the fifth inning and they put the game away in the sixth inning with an eight-run inning. The Jets walked four batters, hit a batter and committed a pair of errors. McFall took advantage of the Jets miscues with a bases loaded three-run double during the inning.

McFall went 3-for-5 with five runs batted in. All five of his at-bats came with runners in scoring position. Wade Stramp (2-for-4), Brett Wilhelm (2-for-4) and Brendan McCarthy (2-for-5) each had two-hit performances for LCU. Tyler Evans was 2-for-4 in the loss for the Jets. Brig Gerlich pitched his second complete game of the season for LCU. He allowed three runs off seven hits in seven innings. The win placed him at 3-2 on the season. Lucas Schauer fell to 2-2 with the loss. He allowed eight runs (six earned) off 11 hits in 5.1 innings.

LCU scored the first seven runs in the second game, getting a three-run home run by Gerardo Arzaga in the third inning (second home run of the season) and a pair of two-run base hits by Stramp and Adam Norblom for a four-run fourth inning. Mitchell Beaudreau put the Jets on the scoreboard with an RBI-single in the seventh inning, but LCU matched the run in the bottom half of the inning with a Brendan McCarthy sacrifice fly.

Arzaga was a triple shy of the cycle, as he led LCU with a 3-for-4 performance with three RBI. Powe finished the game 2-for-4. Newman's Evans (2-for-4) and Garett Thomas (2-for-3) each had two hits in the loss. Guillaume Blanchette improved to 2-1 on the mound for LCU, as he went seven innings and allowed one run off seven hits. Dylan Porter (2-2) took the loss allowing seven runs off nine hits in six innings.

The wins placed LCU with their second coach with 500 wins in his coaching career at LCU. Blackwood, serving in his 12th season, is 500-180 in his LCU coaching career. He is second winningest coach in LCU history behind legendary Larry Hays, who was 695-381 from 1971-1986.

The Chaps improved to 9-8 overall with the win a 2-1 in the Heartland Conference. The Jets fell 5-8 overall and 0-2 in conference. The games were LCU's first conference home games of the season. They close the series Saturday at Hays Field with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
