Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Becca Walters (becca.walters@lcu.edu)

Lady Chaps narrowly avoid two-game sweep

KINGSVILLE, Texas (September 12, 2015) – A few points separated Lubbock Christian University from their first defeat by a double sweep in a single day in a 3-1 match loss (23-25, 17-25, 25-21, 20-25) to Bentley during their second match of the day at the Emerald Beach Hotel-Javelina Volleyball Tournament that precluded a 3-0 setback (20-25, 21-25, 20-25) to Texas A&M-Kingsville in the Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center on the Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

The Lady Chaparrals had not been swept 3-0 in a single day since the 2007 season where the squad was defeated in straight sets by Savannah College A&D and Hastings College. The last time LCU had lost consecutive 3-0 matches on back-to-back days occurred during the 2013 season.

Similar to the Lady Chaps' first game a day prior, the team struggled offensively against TAMUK, producing a season-low 35 kills on a .059 attack percentage, their lowest output in 2015. Ariel Froeschl was the only Lady Chap to record double digits in kills with 10. Mallory Powell notched another double-double with 27 assists and 11 digs.

LCU (5-4, 2-0 Heartland) fell into an early 7-2 hole due in part to four attack errors but was able to tie set one at 14, 15 and 16. TAMUK (5-3, 0-0 Lone Star) then rattled off five straight points to pull ahead 22-16 and ultimately win the set.

A 6-0 run by the Javelinas in set two opened up the contest at 17-10, but Froeschl recorded a kill and the LCU blockers stopped a pair of TAMUK attacks to cut the lead to 17-13. Another Froeschl kill brought the Lady Chaps to within 22-21, but a Javelina kill and two LCU attack errors ended the set to give TAMUK a 2-0 match edge.

A kill that hung on the top of the tape before falling to the Lady Chap floor in set three gave the Javelinas a 6-5 advantage that they would not relinquish again in the contest. TAMUK doubled their lead at 22-11 to cruise to the match victory.

For the Javelinas, Ashley Bukowski registered 12 kills, Casey Klobedans had 36 assists and Brett Zaccardo totaled 29 digs.

Against Bentley (4-4, 0-0 Northeast-10) the Lady Chaps hung close in set one but were never able to clinch the lead. A kill by Christiana Tavo stalled set point for the Falcons at 24-23, but a skying tip over the LCU blockers fell for a narrow Bentley victory.

LCU seemed to ready to dominate set two by scoring the first four points and extending the lead to 7-1on an Emily Hanaway kill, but five straight scores by the Falcons narrowed the gap to 7-6. A block by Maddie Johnson and Froeschl put the Lady Chaps back up 11-9 before Bentley steadily stacked on points to jump ahead 18-13. Powell dumped a shot over the net to surprise the Falcons and slice the lead to 20-17, but LCU gave up the final five points to end the set.

Attempting to avoid a similar mishap as during the 2007 season, the Lady Chaps climbed out to a 19-15 advantage in the third set and again led by four at 22-18 on a kill by Froeschl. Two kills by the Falcons put LCU in jeopardy at 23-21, but a Tavo kill and Bentley attack error saved the Lady Chaps and forced a fourth set.

Four LCU kills opened set four before the Falcons were able to catch the Lady Chaps and knot the contest at 11-all. A Johnson kill put LCU in front, 14-12, but a trio of kills by Bentley's Jaci Buscher were part of six unanswered BU points for an 18-14 lead. A Lady Chap attack error extended the deficit to 23-17 before Bentley came up with the final two points of the night for the match victory.

All-tournament selection Johnson tallied 13 kills, and Powell handed out a game-high 45 assists along with 21 digs.

For Bentley, Buscher's 19 kills were a game-high.

The Lady Chaps open play in the Rip Griffin Center September 17 at 7 p.m. and host preseason Heartland number one pick Arkansas-Fort Smith.
