Weekend sweep for Lady Chaps

LUBBOCK, Texas (September 26, 2015) – Lubbock Christian University volleyball earned its second sweep in as many days by defeating Midwestern State in three sets (25-11, 25-22, 25-13) Saturday afternoon inside the Rip Griffin Center.

Following last night's 3-0 victory over Texas-Permian Basin, the Lady Chaparrals (7-6, 3-2 Heartland) had their best performance at the net of the season against the Mustangs (4-9, 0-2 Lone Star), hitting .283 with 37 kills and a season-low 11 errors. Emily Hanaway notched her seventh double-digit kill performance with 11, while teammates Christiana Tavo and Kacey Deterding each contributed seven. Ariel Froeschl registered five kills and five blocks. LCU held MSU to a dismal .010 attack percentage and forced 26 attack errors.

Set one got off to a fast start for LCU as they jumped ahead 10-3 and piled on six straight points at 15-7 to increase the gap to 20-7. Three of MSU's 12 errors within the set occurred within the final seven points to hand the Lady Chaps the lopsided win.

The Mustangs competed closely in set two, steadily increasing their advantage to 17-11. The Lady Chaps responded with a 7-1 rally run that included kills by Deterding, Tavo and Froeschl to tie the set at 18-all. An MSU kill and service ace put the Mustangs up 20-18, and the visitors then clung to a 22-21 advantage. Maddie Johnson tied the set with a kill and gave her team a 23-22 edge with an ace, and Hanaway came through with two kills to take the set.

The third set was an early battle with the squads tied at 7-7 before a Tavo kill and four MSU errors pushed LCU on top, 12-7. A Mustang kill closed the gap to four, but the Lady Chaps pieced together two 4-0 runs to pull away and record the match victory.

Mallory Powell handed out a game-high 32 assists, and Kelsie French handled a game-best 16 digs.

The Lady Chaps travel to Plainview to face old Sooner Athletic Conference rival Wayland Baptist Tuesday at 7 p.m.
