SAN ANTONIO, Texas (February 5, 2016) – Lubbock Christian University had their work cut out for them in facing the 10th and 12th-ranked teams during day two of the NCAA Division II College Classic and fell by scores of 6-2 versus Tarleton State and 5-1 to fellow Heartland conference member St. Mary's.
SPEED KILLS
During game one, Tarleton State (4-1) used their speedy lineup by first earning a run in the top of the third inning. Second baseman Mikayla Stogsdill singled to left to get on base, was sacrificed over by Taylor Fitzgerald, moved to third on a bunt single by Lauren Powers and scored on the groundout to second by leadoff batter Melody Mayse. In the top of the fourth, the TexAnns were once again able to start the inning with a single and move the runner over to second on a sacrifice bunt. Stogsdill then singled to score the runner to put Tarleton up 2-0.
PITCHER HELPS HERSELF
Katera Eltsosie (4-1) got the start in the circle for the Lady Chaps (6-2) in game one and went the distance. Of the six runs she allowed only two were earned. Eltsosie struck out four and walked none but suffered her first loss of the season. In the bottom of the fourth inning the redshirt junior came up to bat facing two outs with
Morgan Colburn on third and
Molly Davison on second. Eltsosie drove the ball through the middle of the infield to score both and knot the game at 2-2.
ERROR PROVES TOO COSTLY
With two outs In the top of the seventh, Davison dropped a throw from Eltsosie that could have ended the inning with the teams tied, but the error opened the door and TSU capitalized by scoring four runs. Haley Freyman (3-1) got the win for the TexAnns by throwing the complete game. She allowed two runs on three hits while striking out seven LCU batters and walking five.
FAMILIAR FOE
In game two the Lady Chaps faced fellow Heartland conference member St. Mary's (2-0). The Rattlers scored two runs in the first inning off of a Lady Chap throwing error. In the third St. Mary's tacked on their final three runs off of two hits and two hit batters.
Sammie Murrietta led off the fourth inning with a solo shot to left for LCU's lone run of the game.
FINAL DAY
