LUBBOCK, Texas (March 22, 2016) – Five different Lady Chaps hit home runs with
Katlin Reed and
Morgan Colburn each hitting three on the day to lead the LCU to a 18-13 and 10-0 double-header sweep of the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico Tuesday at PlainsCapital Park. Game two was played as the sun set and the Lady Chaps played their first ever game at PlainsCapital Park under the lights which were installed this past off-season.
HOME RUN
Lubbock Christian (30-7) jumped out to an early lead plating eight runs in the first inning. Colburn hit a two-run home run followed immediately by a solo shot from
Molly Davison. Then three batters later
Sydney Beuthien hit her first home run of the year to drive in three more runs.
Ashton Bell singled up the middle to drive in the other two runs in the first to give LCU an 8-0 advantage. Eastern New Mexico (10-24) scored four runs in the top half of the next inning to make it an 8-4 game. Reed led off the bottom half of the third inning with her first home run of the season. Two batters later Bell drew a walk before Colburn came to the plate and hit her team leading 17th home run of the year, second of the game to drive in two more runs.
Sammie Murrietta was walked with the bases loaded to bring home the fourth run of the inning putting LCU up 12-4.
LOTS OF RUNS
The Greyhounds responded in the top of the fourth inning scoring three more runs before Lubbock Christian would get six more of their own in the bottom of the inning giving the Lady Chaps an 18-7 lead. ENMU bounced back in the top of the fifth with a leadoff single followed by a walk and a hit batter to load the bases. Natasha Kissell singled through the right side to drive in a run followed by a single off the bat of Mariah Rodriguez to give the Greyhounds two more runs and the bases still loaded before Erikka Burke hit a grand slam home run to make the game 18-13.
IN THE CIRCLE
Katera Eltsosie (16-3) got the start for LCU in game one going the distance securing her 16th victory of the year. Eltsosie allowed 13 runs off of 14 hits striking out four while giving up four walks. For the Greyhounds three girls shared time in the circle with Kiana Zerr (2-8) getting the start and suffering her eighth loss of the season. Zerr threw two-thirds of an inning allowing eight runs on five hits before being replaced by Katie Ripple. Ripple went one-and-two-thirds innings allowing three runs on three hits. Natasha Kissell came in to throw the last three-and-two-thirds innings allowing seven more runs on four hits.
MORE HOME RUNS
In game two the Lady Chaps scored in all five innings with two runs coming in the first inning when Colburn hit her 18th home run of the season, third of the day, driving in two runs. In the second inning Reed hit her second bomb of the day to drive in two more runs giving LCU a 4-0 advantage after two innings of play. Colburn and
Addison Ard both scored in the third inning off the bat of Beuthien. In the fourth inning Reed once again led off an inning with a home run hitting her third of the day putting the Lady Chaps on top 7-0.
Roxy Curiel came to the plate in the fifth inning with two outs, Beuthien at third base and Reed at second base and hit her first home run of the year for a walk-off, 10-0 run-rule victory.
SHUTOUT
Katlyn Holmes (12-2) threw her third complete-game shutout in a row to notch her 12th win of the season. She allowed only five hits while striking out two Greyhound batters. Natasha Kissell (2-11) took the loss for Eastern New Mexico going three innings allowing seven runs off four hits. Burke came in to throw the last one-and-two-third innings allowing an additional three runs off four hits.
