LUBBOCK, Texas (April 26, 2017) – No.7 Lubbock Christian University was unable to overcome a pair of eighth inning errors, as a two-run eighth inning was enough to lead Wayland Baptist University to a 4-3 win Tuesday evening at Hays Field.
Wayland Baptist unlocked a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning with a solo home run by Caleb Davidson for his 10
th home run of the season. A pair of infield errors followed, allowing the Pioneers to take a 4-2 lead. LCU responded with a
Brent Stewart leadoff double and an ensuing RBI single by
Tony Reyes to cut the Chaps deficit to 4-3. The Chaps were unable to get a hit from their final six batters over the remaining six outs and they fell 4-3.
The teams matched each other in scoring over the game's first seven innings. WBU scored their first two runs on sacrifice flies by Austin Davis. LCU's
Jesse Pintado matched Davis' sacrifice fly in the second inning with one in the bottom of the second inning and
Brett Wilhelm matched Davis' sixth inning sacrifice fly with an RBI-single in the bottom half of the inning.
Jonathan Frost went seven innings for WBU, and claimed the win on the mound (3-1). He allowed three runs off eight hits.
Christian Buatte made the start for LCU and went without a decision. In six innings, he allowed two runs off seven hits and struck out seven batters. The loss went to LCU reliever
Albert Aveytia, who pitched the eighth inning and fell to 2-6.
Brendan McCarthy was 3-for-4 in the loss for LCU. The Chaps had nine hits, with four resulting in doubles and two by McCarthy. Reyes was 2-for-4 to join McCarthy with a mutli-hit game. Davidson (2-for-4), Alex Mumm (2-for-5) and Gregg Veneklasen (2-for-4) each co-led WBU with two hits.
The game was played under windy conditions with winds speeds constantly blowing out to right field (northeast) at over 30 MPH. Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport reported a wind gust of 52 MPH. WBU improved to 38-14 overall and they completed their first ever season sweep of the Chaps, who fell to 31-13 overall. LCU will head to Oklahoma City, Okla. Thursday to jump back into Heartland Conference action and open a three-game series with Oklahoma Christian.
