Day One Split in the Cactus Classic

TUCSON, Ariz. (February 17, 2017) – Lubbock Christian University split day at the 2nd Annual D2 Cactus Classic in Tucson, Arizona on Friday taking game one 2-1 over No. 23 Dixie State before falling 3-2 to University of Mary.
 
DOUBLE
In the bottom of the first inning Lindzi Clemmer doubles down the left field line followed by a double to left-center field by Sydney Beuthien to score Clemmer and give the Lady Chaps (12-2) an early 1-0 lead.
 
PINCH
After the Trailblazers (8-2) scored a run in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game the Lady Chaps came back in the bottom of the fifth inning the sophomore form Trophy Club, Texas, Logan Grado, pinch hi and drove the ball up the middle to plate pinch runner Shelby Welch and put LCU up 2-1.
 
IN THE CIRCLE
Katera Eltsosie (6-0) started in the circle for LCU going five innings and striking out two before giving way to Monique Garcia (1) who pitched the final two inning allowing only two hits to earn her first save of the season. For Dixie State Brooklyn Beardshear (4-1) went the distance suffering her first loss of the year.
 
BEHIND EARLY
In game two against Marauders of the University of Mary (1-6) the Lady Chaps fell behind early off an errant throw by Beuthien in the top of the first inning that allowed a run to score. However, the Lady Chaps answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the second inning when Courtney Medina drove in Roxy Curiel and Clemmer hit a ball to the shortstop that scored Averi Miller and put LCU up 2-1.
 
LONG BALL
With two outs and a runner at second base in the top of the fifth inning Taylor Mendez hit a bomb over the centerfield fence to put Mary back up 3-2. Monique Garcia (4-2) pitched 6.1 innings for LCU giving up three runs on nine hits striking out four to suffer her second loss of the season. Taylor Lara (1-1) went 5.1 innings for the Marauders allowing two runs on nine hits to earn her first victory of the year.
 
DAY TWO
The Lady Chaps have two games on Saturday at Lincoln Park in Tucson to continue play in the 2nd Annual D2 Cactus Classis hosted by the Tucson Invitational Games. They face the Academy of Art at 12:30 p.m. (CST) immediately followed by a game against Fort Lewis College. You can catch all of the action at www.lcuchaps.com.
