The injury-bug caught up with the Lady Chaparrals Saturday, as they dropped a pair of matches at the Concordia Portland Labor Day Classic in Portland, Ore. LCU was swept in straight sets, falling 3-0 to Cal State Dominguez Hills and tournament host Concordia. Returning senior setter
Mallory Powell was injured Friday and did not play Saturday. That put the setting duties on
Cory Jo Martin and Brynn Martin. Several players played through injury. Returning kills leader
Emily Hanaway saw limited action in the opener and did not play in the nightcap.
How It Happened
CSU Dominguez Hills Game
Set One:
The opening set contained the most drama, as the set was filled with a tied score on 10 occasions. The Toros opened the set with a 6-2 lead before LCU responded with a pair of aces from
Kelsie French leading to a 5-1 run to tie the set 7-7. LCU led as much as 17-14 before a timeout by CSUDH alluded to a 5-1 response for the Toros. They led 24-21 before LCU used a kill from
Channing Stewart to cap a 3-0 run to tie the set at 24-24. The Toros eventually had three set-point serves and clinched the final one with a kill by Claire Autry for a 28-26 set win. Bridget Heins (seven kills) and Tati Yandall (five kills) combined for 12 of the Toros 19 kills in the set.
Set Two:
The Toros were full of miscues early in the second set and LCU took advantage of four of them to jump out to a 10-4 lead. LCU would be outscored 21-11 the rest of the way. A 14-2 run featuring four kills by Heins put the Toros up 18-12 before proceding with the 25-21 set win. Zoller led LCU with four kills in the set, while Yandall (six kills) and Heins (four kills) combined for another big set for the Toros with 10 kills.
Set Three:
LCU had another quick start in the third set, with four straight aces by
McKaley Johnson helping the Lady Chaps to a 10-5 lead. Trailing 15-12, the Toros went on an 11-3 run filled with six kills and took a 23-18 lead before crusing 25-21 to win in straight sets. LCU was held to six kills and they committed nine attack errors.

Concordia Game
Set One:
The Cavaliers broke a 6-6 tie in the opening set with a 7-1 run, led by four LCU errors, to take a 13-8 advantage. They led as much as 16-9 before LCU responded with a pair of kills from
Channing Stewart and a trio of blocks from
Jaiden Kennedy for a 9-3 run. The run cut the deficit to 19-18, but it would be as close as they would get, as Concordia closed the set on a 6-3 run to claim the set 25-21. Kennedy finished the set with four blocks.
Set Two:
Concordia closed the second set with a 7-1 run to take the set 25-22. The set was tightly played, as neither team led by more than three points. The set was tied 12-12 before LCU eventually led 21-18. The lead slipped away, as Colby Barnett played a big part of the 7-1 run with a solo block and the clinching kill for the Cavs. Zoller produced seven kills in the set to lead LCU, while CU's Lindsey Dorsey produced six in the set.
Brynn Warnack produced 11 digs in the set for LCU.
Set Three:
The late rallies by the Cavs took the wind out of the sails of the Lady Chaps in the final set, as Concordia opened the set on a 14-4 run. The burst of offense out of the gate led to a 25-12 set win to complete the match in straight sets. CU finished with 9 aces, with four coming in the third set.

15 – LCU was limited to 29 kills in the match, but they produced 15 of them in the second set
16 –
Brynn Warnack completed her first career double-double with 16 assists and 16 digs. She led LCU in each category.
