ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (October 30, 2018) - New Mexico only outscored Lubbock Christian University in one of four quarters, but a 22-8 outburst in the second quarter was enough to defeat the Lady Chaparrals 62-55 Tuesday night in front of 4,240 fans in an exhibition affair inside Dreamstyle Arena (The Pit).
LCU had a 12-10 lead after closing the first quarter on a 5-0 run,and had built the lead to 14-11 after a bucket from
Ashton Duncan, but things went downhill the rest of the half for the Lady Chaps. Shaiquel McGruder produced back-to-back old fashioned three-point plays to start an 8-0 Lobo run. LCU's
Bobbi Chitsey hit a three-pointer to cap a 6-0 response, only to have UNM close the half on a 10-2 run for a 32-20 lead for the Lobos.
The Lobos built their lead to 48-32 (1:14 remaining in the third quarter) before LCU started their comeback bid. Chitsey nailed a long three-pointer with time expiring to start an 8-2 LCU run. Trailing 54-41, LCU used another Chitsey field goal to start another run. Her field goal with 6:56 left in the game started an 8-0 run and LCU trailed 54-49.
Maddi Chitsey missed a free-throw, which would have cut the deficit to four points, and UNM responded with back-to-back three-point field goals to put the Lobos lead back to double digits with 1:24 left. LCU still continued to fight and cut the UNM lead to 62-55 before time expired.
LCU outscored UNM 12-10 in the first quarter and 19-14 in the final quarter. The Lady Chaps offense faltered in the second quarter, going 3-of-17 (17.6%) from the field and 1-of-10 (10%) from long distance. LCU finished the game 4-of-23 from three-point range. UNM outrebounded LCU 43-41.
Maddi Chitsey led LCU with 13 points and her sister Bobbi provided 10 points.
