How It Happened
Set One:
Teams were neck-and-neck to start the match, as neither team had more than a two-point lead margin until LCU, trailing 7-9, went on a 7-1 run to take a 15-10 lead.
Lauren Zoller co-led LCU with four kills in the set and three came during the 7-1 run. The squads traded points the rest of the set and LCU opened the match with a 1-0 lead with a 25-20 set win. LCU produced a .277 attack percentage in the set, with 17 kills. Fifteen of the kills were assisted by Marshall.
McKaley Johnson led LCU with nine digs in the set. Joining Zoller for LCU's lead in kills in the set was
Avery Moore,
Jaiden Kennedy and
Ashley Vanfleet. Moore's four kills came on five attempts.
Set Two:
UTPB never trailed in the set, as they opened with a 7-2 run to start the set. After 17 kills in the opening set, LCU was held to six kills in the set. They were able to take advantage of a trio of Falcon errors to cut the deficit to 20-16, but it was as close as they would get, falling 25-19. Moore led LCU with three kills in the set. Friel led UTPB with five kills on eight attempts in the set.
Set Three:
The Falcons had a block early to take a 5-4 lead, but LCU responded with an 8-2 run filled with a trio of kills from
Ashley Vanfleet, who led LCU with five kills in the set. LCU built the lead to 17-11 before UTPB began their comeback bid. They tied the score at 20-20, 22-22 and 23-23, but could not overtake the lead. Moore produced a kill and Johnson followed with an ace to clinch the set 25-23. Friel had her second straight set of five kills for UTPB, who fell despite 15 kills in the set. LCU had 16 kills and 4.0 blocks in the frame (three each by
Morgan Schwarz and Moore).
Set Four:
The Lady Chaps were cruising early, jumping out to a 6-1 and 15-6 lead, but things went downhill from there. UTPB closed the set on a 19-5 advantage to win the set 25-20.
Karley David-McLeroy led LCU in the set with four kills. Travana Mathews and and Haleigh Robinson each had four kills as well for UTPB.
Set Five:
The fifth set did not disappoint following the build-up. The score was tied on eight occasions and there were two lead changes. LCU trailed 10-8, but a kill from Moore and an attack error following an LCU timeout led to UTPB calling a timeout with the set tied 10-10. The turning point of the set came with LCU leading 12-11. French was able to scramble well beyond the end-line to chase down a pass and get the ball continued to the UTPB side of the court, where Robinson's kill attempt was blocked by Kennedy for a 13-11 lead. Kennedy later had a kill to put LCU up 14-12 before Zoller ended the set with her team-leading fourth kill of the set to clinch the set 15-12 and the match 3-2. The 15-12 lead (three-point margin) was the only time during the set in which a team led by more than two points. LCU produced a .385 kill percentage in the set.
