SAN ANTONIO, Texas (November 23, 2018) –
Allie Schulte (16 points) was 4-of-5 from three-point range and combined for 31 points with
Kailin Davis (15 points), as No.3/10 Lubbock Christian University opened the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic with a 72-47 win over Kutztown University Friday afternoon inside Bill Greehey Arena.
Once LCU shook off the Thanksgiving tryptophan, they overcame a 6-0 deficit with a slew of runs. Seven different players figured into the first quarter scoring, led by eight points from Schulte (2-of-2 from long range), as LCU went on a 7-0 run, a 10-0 run and an additional 7-0 run as part of a 24-5 scoring surge for LCU. LCU, shooting 71.4% (5-of-7) in the first quarter, led 20-11 at the end of the first quarter during the run.
The Lady Chaps built the lead to 30-19 at the half, shooting 60% (9/15) in the half. Schulte led all scorers with 13 points in the half off 5-of-6 shooting (3-of-4 from long distance). She also had a trio of steals. LCU had a 7-4 scoring advantage in the half despite 14 turnovers (compared to 13 by KU).
LCU controlled the turnover bugaboo in the second half, committing four, and continued to build their lead. The Lady Chaps defense held the Golden Bears to five field goals in the combined middle quarters (5-of-17, 29.4%), holding them to three in the third quarter. Two of the three KU field goals in the quarter were tallied in the opening 34 seconds of the quarter, as KU cut LCU's lead to 30-23. The runs then continued, as LCU responded with a 6-0 and 14-0 run as part of a 20-2 scoring streak to build the LCU lead to 50-25. Davis had nine of her 14 second-half points in the third quarter and helped LCU take a 52-29 lead into the fourth quarter.
The two teams combined for 15 field goals in the fourth quarter (nine by LCU) and they each had their highest field goal total of the four quarters. Freshmen
Laynee Burr and
Channing Cunyus combined for three of the field goals, as LCU's depth flourished in the quarter outscoring the Golden Bears 20-18 in the quarter. They led as much as 62-32 (7:36 remaining in the game) in the quarter.
LCU had a 15-5 rebounding advantage in the first half and finished the game with a 35-19 rebounding lead. LCU had 12 offensive boards (compared to 14 KU defensive boards), leading to a 17-8 scoring advantage in second-chance scoring.
Teams combined for 40 turnovers, with KU committing 22 and leading to LCU outscoring the Golden Bears 22-7 in points off turnovers. LCU had seven steals, with Schulte nabbing three. Of the 40 turnovers, 15 were due to traveling infractions (10 by KU).
Davis and Schulte each went 6-of-8 (75%) from the field and they combined to go 6-of-8 from three-point range for the Lady Chaps, who went 7-of-12 (58.3%) from downtown. Along with their offensive support, the Lady Chaps also received a career-high 10 points from
Emma Middleton, who also had three rebounds and three blocks in 15 minutes of action. LCU improved to 6-1 with the win.
The Kutztown, Pa. based Golden Bears (1-4) received 16 points from Karen Lapkiewicz and 13 points from Rylee Derr. KU entered the game ranking 26
th nationally in three-point field goals per game, but was 3-of-14 (21.4%) from three-point range. Derr entered the game ranking 10
th in three-pointers per game and was 1-of-4 in the game. The meeting was the first ever meeting between the two squads and the game for LCU against a Pennsylvania based program.
TURNING POINT
KU pulled within seven of the Lady Chaps with a 4-0 run to start the second half, but then the Golden Bears went a span of 3:46 and 5:41 without a field goal in the third quarter, while LCU went on a 20-2 run. During the two third quarter dry spells, KU was a combined 0-of-6 from the field with six turnovers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
In 28 minutes on the floor,
Juliana Robertson was a team-high +28 in plus/minus. She was 2-of-2 from the field (six points), with a block, two assists, zero turnovers and a team-leading seven rebounds. It is the second consecutive game she has led the team in rebounds.

LCU remains in San Antonio, Texas Saturday and will face No.1 Central Missouri at 1 p.m. inside Bill Greehey Arena. It will mark the second consecutive season LCU has faced the defending national champion in San Antonio.
