LUBBOCK, Texas (February 10, 2018) – For a third consecutive game, Regis kept No.7 Lubbock Christian University quiet at the plate. Chris Isbel pitched seven scoreless innings and had a trio of teammates follow him in relief to help Regis shutout LCU 1-0 in 10 innings at Hays Field.
Isbell and the Rangers outdueled the Chaps pitchers, who were also lobbying for a shutout. LCU's
Ryan Johnson made his Chaps pitching debut and went eight shutout innings with two hits allowed. He struck out seven batters.
Chandler Casey (0-1) relieved Johnson and had four strikeouts in two innings. With two Rangers aboard in the ninth inning, Casey was able to get a strikeout to get out of the jam, but an error would not let him escape the 10
th inning with the game tied. Zach Dedin doubled in the tenth inning and later scored an unearned run of an infield error for the game's only run. The error was one of four committed by LCU.
LCU was held to four hits in the game and did not get their first hit until a
Ryan Rogers single in the fifth inning. It marked the third consecutive game LCU has not had a hit prior to the fifth inning. Rogers finished the game with two hits, going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Johnson allowed two hits and each were hit by Chris Kobar, who finished with three of the Rangers five hits in the game. Kobar had a hit in the second and seventh innings and Johnson faced 17 consecutive batters without allowing a hit in between Kobar's two hits.
Isbell allowed all four LCU hits over his seven innings on the mound and he struck out eight batters. Chris Quackenbush, Scott Vinceri (1-0) and Patrick Kenny (save) each pitched an inning in relief without allowing a hit. Ranger pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts.
The last time LCU lost a 1-0 decision was on Mar. 18, 2016 at home hosting St. Mary's. Saturday's game marked the first time a LCU game was scoreless heading into extra innings since their contest on Mar. 3, 2017 went into extra innings scoreless (LCU won the game at St. Mary's 2-0 in eight innings). The last time a LCU game scheduled for nine innings went into extra innings scoreless was on May 13, 2011 against Northwood (Texas), which LCU won 3-0 in the 10
th inning.
LCU fell to 0-3 with the loss, while Regis improved to 3-0. LCU's loss in extra innings marked their first extra-inning affair this season (they went 3-2 in games ending in extra innings last season). The two teams are scheduled to complete the four-game series Sunday at Hays Field, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
